I don't think this is where everyone is headed.

I think you have enough institutions who are smart enough to realize this is a deal with the devil and will not go down this route.

This will not end well for Utah, in my opinion. It's a payday loan, but the loan shark will get to move in with you and tell you how to live your life in order to make your interest payments to him.

So, more so than ever, I will be cheering for professional mercenaries, coaches and players alike, who wear my team's color one day and my opponents the next.

Might as well toss out all the Aggie cheers and traditions, all of college footballs for that matter, because we won't be rooting for Aggies, or Ducks, or whomever, but freelancers with no ties, or even interest, in our institution or culture other than who is the highest bidder.

The second they start pursuing profit over winning, the fans are going to really hate this deal.

Absolutely.

PE doesn't care about anything but profit. Jerry Jones has made the Dallas Cowboys extremely profitable, but they haven't won a damn thing in 30 years.

In todays world of no patience or foresight, I'd be shocked if most don't adopt this. Fans will cry for doing what wins ballgames instead of doing what's right.for the University long term. But hey, we'll have a 128 team playoff so no one gets left out.

I don't know the % equity given up for each deal, but the Big Ten is considering $2.4B for the entire conference vs Utah raising $500M just for themselves. The Big Ten would be crazy to give up any amount of control for that number. Now if they were offering $1B per school to the Big Ten that would be something they'd have to consider.

curious what the PE firm thinks of Title IX

they will spend zilch on nonrevenue sports and maybe even cut some

The way I am reading that, the PE firm won't have to think about Title IX much, if at all as the university will remain on that hook. In the same manner that universities had to keep and eye and police their boosters. (Think SMU. Nothing happened to the actual boosters illegally paying out the money but the university was hammered.)

But I don't like this arrangement at all. I guess technically it is completely legal but is still very risky for the university athletics department and the university itself.

At some point major college sports (FB and bigger basketball programs) must be severed from academics. Athletes are students in name only. Does anyone in our 2-deep actually attend in-person classes anymore?

Programs obviously can/will use on campus facilities, and the Aggie FB team can still be affiliated with TAMU, but let's finally stop pretending that there's any connection between sports and education.

I imagine they'd take the AD and separate it from the university and do away with scholarships. Instead of schollies you'd have NIL paychecks and the athletes would have to pay for school out of that. I think that would render Title IX moot.

and the amazing thing that happens next is that eligibility limits goes poof

imagine how long johnny could have played at aTm, he would most likely still be playing LOL

and if you squint hard enough what you see is a viable, tangible and real existential threat to the NFL

No scholarships mean no scholarship limits? That won't work. We'll be back in the wild wild west days of the 60s and early 70s. Meat on the Hoof style.

In the end, the universities and certain PE groups/BMDs will own college athletics and will look exactly like the pro leagues. You'll be able to trade players, you'll be able to keep players for as long as you want, and you'll probably have salary caps in place along with long term contracts.

You will see the future versions of JFF and Vince Young types be college level players for a looooonnnnnggggg time when the above gets setup.

Last I heard when the big ten broached this idea they were well down the path towards an agreement before 2 schools held everything up. They didn't like the idea of P/E being involved and know its a slippery slope.

Now that said, everyone, including universities have their price. Can P/E reach it?
