What's the ROI play here for the big money donors (ours and others). These guys don't just throw that kind of money around without some type or return, right? Is it just to pound their chest and say they made it happen? Power trip being able to flex they bought the roster (and coaches) to make it happen?

think of it like this.

if you had a billion dollars, would you rather buy the cowboys or make sure that the aggies are in the playoffs every year.

My assumption is what you listed above, plus access. That could be anything from access to facilities, coaches, or luxury suites.

Suites, and the multi-year deals on those were around long before NIL...

was out of the closet and discussed publicly.

Grown men with money living vicariously through the accomplishments of college football players and coaches who feel they were responsible for the success. And in the day of NIL, it's truer than it's ever been. Probably similar to the feeling an NFL team owner has.

Which most pointedly NOT be the motive of a PE firm, They want $$$$$ for their ROI.

Access.

I have a friend that is a big money donor for Ohio State. He lives in Dallas, but goes to every OSU game. They go to team dinners before the game. They will fly up to Columbus on Thursday and then fly on the team plane to away games. They pretty much can do whatever they want around the program.

I'm an lolpoor who will never have to worry about this, but man - I'd feel so creepy eating dinner with the team and being on their plane.

Former students and others with money supporting the anticipated accomplishments of college football players and coaches representing their favorite university.

Have a buddy at work who has some friends in the lower sphere of this at A&M.

Sounds like some of it is the hobby of watching Aggie football, and some of it is access, less to the team, but more getting into the social circle of other high dollar donors/networking/connections/etc. that class of donors would bring together.

I thought that was very insightful.

But it's also sometimes people with more money than stuff to do with it, so why not throw some of it on your sports hobby team?

If you buy some sort of physical item (i.e. real estate, auto/plane, jewelry, art ) you then have to maintain it, insure it, etc..

If you purchase experiences ("investing in your team") that $ is gone *poof* and you are just left with lasting smiles (if it works...) maybe gained the ability to shake a few hands on the way.
