HS football is unwatchable. Of course I'd rather watch this then the "lovefest" for Stuart Scott

Kid may be good, may not be - haven't watched.

I do get tired of us constantly getting commits from QBs who's other offers are good, but not great, schools and then hyping them up as the next big thing.

You should never watch HS football games and assume anything.

Hope not.
I didn't watch anything about the game this thread is referencing, but generally speaking (and using a basketball reference) there's a big difference between watching a kid shoot 3's during practices and/or camps, versus watching a kid shoot 3's during a game. Especially if the game has real stakes, for both teams involved.

I watched for a bit in the 3rd quarter when Corner Canyon was down 28-0 and trying desperately to cut the lead. During this time the announcers were mentioning several of the players on the St. Francis defense and the P4 school they are committed to or signed with, lots of big names like A&M and Bama. Nothing was said about the players on the Corner Canyon o line. So maybe not the best representation of what we're getting at QB.

Our past two QB's...so their other offers were not great? Facts don't fit your narrative there...

Reed's Offers were:
  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Baylor
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Kentucky
  • Miami
  • Penn State
  • TCU
  • Tennessee
  • Texas A&M
  • Vanderbilt
  • Virginia Tech
  • Weigman's Offers were:
  • Texas A&M (where he signed)
  • Arkansas
  • Auburn
  • Baylor
  • Florida
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • Missouri (reported as interest/offer)
  • Texas (offer per recruiting list)
  • Virginia Tech

Basketball is a bad analogy and I think a lot of QB coaches would tell you that they can project more from HS to college based on camps. A 17 year old kid is soooooo far from being a refined product that them beating up on kids smaller than them doesn't actually tell us a lot. Most high schools don't even run a legitimate offense. At camps, coaches can evaluate a kid's velocity, arm strength, throws with anticipation, accuracy, footwork, etc. Coaches want to interact with the kid one on one and see how he responds to coaching.

In game, it's hard to control for poor OL, bad receivers, game plans, team strengths, good or bad defense. It's just a different game. At camps, the coaches get to choose what to throw at the kid. Think he struggles with the deep ball? Ok, ask him to throw the deep ball consistently. Think he struggles with throwing on the run since his HS OL is playing kids 100 pounds less? Ok, ask him to throw on the run consistently.

There's a ridiculous amount of skill development in college. The coaches don't need a refined product. They want a kid who wants to be coached and has the raw materials. They will teach him the skill, but they need the raw ingredients.
