I bet he is better than the guy Elko basically removed from the position during the early part of the season.

Is he also coaching LBs like Bateman did or is one of the other coaches (or new coach)? We need improvement so we don't have to hear in pressers how we misfit the run each week.

The fact that this promotion happened so fast makes me doubt if the OC will be from within.

this should allow for us to maintain continuity in our inability to make proper run fits going forward.

It's Elko defense. Are you saying you want to fire Elko?

His history is the secondary, mostly safeties. So, I think we need to add a LB coach.

no, i'm posting here in hopes of solving real world problems. i would, however, very much like for the weakest part of our defense to improve at some point. now would be a great time for that to happen.

Coaches are paid to solve problems. In my view, Elko gets high marks this year. We struggled last year in pass coverage, explosive plays from WRs and basically no depth at TE. Each improved dramatically this year. Elko took responsibility for defensive play calling and zone defense in pass coverage following the bowl meltdown last year. We lost Noah Thomas in the portal and replaced him with two really explosive players. TE blocking struggled last year. We added significant beef at the position this year. Elko is in year two. It took Mack eight years to win the Big XII at Texas. Kirby two years to win the SEC at UGA and then an extended drought by Kirby standards. Of course, the perpetual complainers are always going to complain. We haven't won conference title since 1998. Elko has us moving in the right direction. Give time, I think he will succeed despite the rampant naysayers.

I think it more says this was planned for quite sometime.

bateman was going to be out at end of year.

Elko hired Hemphill, a sitting defensive coordinator, last year knowing that he would replace Bateman because we were not renewing Bateman's contract, which expires this year. This was planned out over a year in advance by Elko.

Not sure Elko was quite as far out ahead on replacing Klein because I think he expected to have him for one more year, but I'm not that worried about it.

In the 2024 college football season, James Madison (JMU) had a dominant defense, ranking highly nationally in key metrics like
Total Defense (around 321.8 Yds/G)
Rushing Defense (2nd nationally at 68.5 Yds/G)
Points Allowed (14th at 17.8 PPG)
showcasing elite performance in yards per play allowed (4.5 Yds/Play) and holding opponents to low third-down conversions (33.63%), solidifying their status as a top defensive unit in FBS football.

Ill take that rushing defense stat all day and he did Special Teams previously which was a low point this year for sure.

I was under the impression that Bateman was effectively fired last year when Elko took over the defense. The writing was on the wall when Elko was still calling plays this year. He wants to be a CEO coach, not calling plays.

I imagine Bateman was kept on this year as a professional courtesy, a one year tenure is a death sentence for a coach. It's a good way for Elko to keep a good reputation in the coaching world.

Are we just gonna 100% blame coaches or can we start to put some responsibility on the highly paid players?

If the coaches choose who plays and who is on the team…. It's still the coaches. That said, they probably get a lot of pressure to play certain individuals.

Well, the coaches do select the players still after all.

Yes.

Seems to be the case. I guess the person actually running into the back of the DL right in front of them is just doing what he's told?
