Why do A&M offenses NEVER have any wrinkles?

Week after week I see other teams pull out wrinkles to take advantage of over aggressive defenses, many times against A&M's defense, but I never see it done by our offense.

I see double passes when the DB's are being overly aggressive in the WR screen game, reverses when the defense is over pursuing in the run game, RB screens and shovel passes when the defensive ends are getting upfield too quickly. The LB's are scared of the QB running on the goal line, hit them with a Tim Tebow jump pass. I even see Arch Manning catching touchdown passes.

The only time time we get something different , it's that stupid option play that Klein ran against South Carolina that looked like it had never been practiced before running it and had 0 chance of working.

Why does A&M always have the least imagination offense imaginable? This is a decades old problem, that only took a brief pause when Kingsbury was here with JFF. Even Bobby P got neutered by Jimbo's snooze fest of an offense.

Pretty sure we are in for more lackluster and uninspiring play calling from a new coordinator, with no play calling experience.

Our offense didnt seem to change much week to week. Became very predictable.

i was surprised we didn't have more out of th box plays myself. especially with KC who can play running back and can throw the ball. he played wildcat qb at NC st and threw the ball a few times.

Running QB is our main wrinkle.

Otherwise, I think we do plenty of misdirection.

Miami probably ran what, 4 or 5 straight up trick plays and none of them worked that I recall. We ran the fake punt, which failed.

I'd be happier with the QB hitting a check down in stride than a bunch of trick plays.

They were so proud of the power T formation we ran that one game. Then we never ran anything like it again lol

Agree with OP, just a little imagination would go along way.
I wanna see our defense pissed off, not confused, maybe a little murder in their hearts Reload12, 11/4/11

Y'all are insufferable. We have wrinkles.

On 3rd and long, teams are often not sure if we'll run up the middle by handing off to the left or to the right.

The punny answer, of course, is that we're pressing too hard.

It was that way because Klein lacks creativity as an OC. I'm glad he's gone. But here's the bottom line unvarnished truth: unless we bring in a really good QB coach who knows what he's doing we're screwed next season.

Holding back the playbook for our September 5, 2026 game with Missouri State.

I had a post on here talking about this yesterday, but I think this was one of our biggest reasons for the November-December dropoff.

Klein has a unique offense and I think he believes that if it's executed (bad word, I know) correctly, you don't need the wrinkles. So while we aren't updating things, the defense is, and we couldn't transcend that. Similar to Kellen Moore in Dallas as OC.

I don't pretend to be an expert but it looks like the QB has a run or pass option on most plays. That is your wrinkle - Klein is letting his QB operate within his system.

I recall hearing Jackie Sherrill say his offenses were good because we were very good at disguising our weaknesses. Seems our weaknesses were on full display lately.

Elko said they would have new wrinkles for the Miami game. Didn't see any but when the OL couldn't block anyone (run or pass pro), think all wrinkles were flat ironed immediately.

Did a poorly attempted punt fake, but that was just dumb after hindsight.

The fake punt would have worked if we had just run a route to get the first down and not throw way downfield.

Execution was our issue. A lot of "wrinkles" are added but only work when they are executed properly. I seem to recall a screen for a TE and they worked in the beginning of the season not so much at the end.

It's hard to hide a weak performance by the OL. If you can't win the line of scrimmage, nothing will work.

We had a couple of runs for 4-5 yards. That constituted a trick play given the OL performance in that game…..

I'm not necessarily sure about a lot of trick plays, but I believe the pinnacle of Klein's play calling occurred against Mizzou. We made so many money calls that took advantage of the numbers in the box/alignment. Klein was pulling out all the tricks of the trade in his bag in an uneven chess match.

Felt like the rest of the season after that we would often run plays that had no chance of working. Short side screens with 4 defenders within 5 yards of the LOS shaded towards 2 receivers, etc. Which can work to set something up, but that never really happened.

maybe it's because our OCs never have any wrinkles (e.g., indications of experience).

And therein lies the key. Reed fails far too often at hitting checkdowns in stride, terrible throws to WR on Bubble Screens, failing to hit WR in stride on slants, deeper passes when the WR is wide open, etc.

I don't see this changing as it's either instinctual or not.

I don't know why we didn't include Bussey in a jet screen/pass situation- he played QB in high school for heaven's sake, use his skills.

Maybe it's because when the pressure is on, we come out too stiff.
