Have been thinking about a format change to how teams are picked. Figured id post it here for all the good reasons on why im an idiot.

First rank conferences based on media contract size.
1. Big 10
2. SEC
3. Big 12
4. Acc
5. Dont care
6. Someone else
7. Etc.

Top two conferences by contract get thier top 4 teams in. Next two conferences get top two teams in. Conferences ranked 5 and below are a general pool with the top 4 teams based on coaches poll ranking getting in.

This gives 16 teams. Seeding for the playoff is based on final rankings of the coaches poll.

First round is played on home field of higher seed team.

Do away with conference championship games. Each conference names a champion after the playoff ends based on total win loss and conference specific tie breakers.

This allows first round games to start when traditional conference championships are being played and quarterfinals can be played before Christmas.

Semifinals make up your new years eve and new years games. The other new years bowl games at this point could invite teams from the losers bracket if they want and espn wants the dollars.

Fire up the old BCS computer. Playoffs for top 24 teams. Higher seed hosts homegame until title game at a neutral site. Cut the regular season short one game. Games start first week after regular season. No byes. Tell the committee vaya con dios.

Has anyone suggested we go to a best of 7 series and determine the 12 by preseason rankings? Just like the nba, but other teams play a regular season with an NIT type tournament.

The worst part about changing to a 4 team playoff and then to a 12 team is all the suggestions to change it even further.

A 16-team playoff similar to what's done now, except:

1. SelSunday is the Sunday after T-giving;
2. First AND second round games at home;
3. First round game 2nd week of December;
4. 8-team "NIT" like playoff beginning 1st week of December. First round at home sites.

If anyone who gets picked refuses to play ala ND, they're out of consideration for anything the next season.

Adjust the portal dates accordingly.

The SEC CG was the first CCG and didn't even start until 1992 (or thereabouts). We went 20 years into the modern era without one and can survive fine without them now. If conferences INSIST on them, they can shorten their regular season and play them on T+1/2. It isn't like that's draconian: most SEC (and other conferences') teams play a non-conference team late in the season. Just move everything up a week. There were 12 Saturdays between Labor Day and T-giving. That's sufficient time for 11 games (3 non-con + 8 conf). Anyone wanting to play the week before can do that as well.

OR, the conferences can have everyone still play on T-giving weekend, just have the CCG as the 1 vs. 2 in conference (or East/West 1, etc.). In other words, a floating schedule. If A&M or t.u. has to be in Atlanta the week after our game pending a win (or just pending being a top-2 team), why can't Miss. State be in Lexington or Gainesville with the same notice? The next year that team will be at home regardless of place.

So this year, the schedule would have looked something like this:

Dec. 5/6: "NIT" first round at home sites
Dec. 12/13: CFP first round at home sites
Dec. 17/18 (or 19/20): "NIT" semis at bowl games
Dec. 19/20 (or 22/23): CFP quarters at home
Dec. 31: NIT Final
Jan. 1/2: CFP Semis
Jan. ~10: CFP Final
Jan. 11: Portal opens

Top 16 based on FPI rankings. No FCS games. No conference championship games (won't ever happen) and crown regular season champion.

Top 4: first round bye
5-8: home field advantage for first round
9-16: play-in/wild card round during normal CCG weekend.

OR

Top 6 teams based on FPI. Keep CCG games and cupcake schedules

1-2: bye
3-6: first round games

Eff it. Just cut back to 4. One from each major conference (ND can join a conference if they want in)

Or get rid of the whole thing and let the final poll decide.

I enjoyed the whole bowl season a lot more before we had all this.

Simplest of simple. Take the top 16 ranked teams. No byes. Incorporate the top bowl games into all of the games. Eliminate some of these other worthless bowl games out there.

The current format will give us an undisputed national champ. That's what it's supposed to do. Only issue I have with it is the G5 teams getting in. They should be excluded.

Top 16 p4 conference teams based on their record. All zero and 1 loss teams are in. 2 loss teams are all in if they fit. The Commitee or the AP poll if you prefer, ranks the 3 loss teams and if space is still there they make it in order.

No byes 8 games first Saturday, 4 games second Saturday. 2 games New Year's Day, championship games the following Saturday night.

All zero loss teams are seeded first to whatever, then the 1 loss teams etc. ND needs to join a conference if they wanna play. 9 conference games minimum or you don't qualify. Only 12 game regular season counts.

It's really easy and first 2 rounds can be on campus.

I think the playoffs just need to be the top whatever. 4,8,12, or 16. No automatic bids for winning your conference for anybody. Let winning your conference be your standing for making your case to be in the playoff. 8 games makes everyone play, as 16 would also, but 16 teams seems like too many to me. Top 8 make it, use the main 6 bowls for each game of the playoff, rotating each year. Cotton, Peach, Fiesta, Rose, Sugar, and Orange, then one of them gets the national title game as well. Keeps tradition of the big bowls alive, but also gives you a clear champion from a smaller group. This also adds value back to the regular season. And then we fix schedules to bring 9 conference games, plus 3 OOC games that can no longer contain FCS opponents and only 1 G6 opponent. Ideally, it would make ND join a conference, too…but if the plan is to get the best teams to play for a title every year, while still valuing the regular season, then make the playoff 8 teams and have them play real schedules instead of stupidity for OOC that nobody cares about.

The format is fine as is. Keep it this way for at least 8 more years to have real data on if changes are really needed.

Other bowl games aren't going anywhere. They make too much money.
