SEC is overrated. At least this year. The bottom teams are just trash.

A lot of people said that our bottom teams could compete to win the acc/ big 12

I never believed it but some people made that argument

A lot of people said that because of Miss State beating Arizona State.

And from reading this thread I just assumed State was getting throttled when I tuned in to find that it's an 8 point game in the 2nd quarter lol

So did several other SEC teams. Miss St had a lot of really close losses, they just didn't have the depth to finish games in the 4th quarter.

Sips also only scored 14 against them through 3 quarters, Tennessee was in an absolute dog fight with them and probably got lucky to win in overtime

Sips got bailed out against Mississippi State on a bogus roughing the passer call after a failed 4th down. It helped complete their 24 point comeback to take State to overtime.

Mississippi State blocks Wake Forest's extra point and returns it for 2 points to cut Wake Forest's lead to 36-29 with 4:07 left. Otherwise, Wake Forest would have had a 37-27 lead.

This is some great drama. Let's go cowbell. State of MS is going to save this conference.

Wake Forest defeated Mississippi State 43-29 to finish 9-4 (4-4 ACC), their best record since an 11-3 finish in 2021, and they won 7 of their last 9 games after starting 2-2. In contrast, Mississippi State has lost 4 consecutive games, all by double digits, to finish 5-8 (1-7 SEC). I noticed a few other stats:

1. Both teams played in a bowl game for the first time in 3 years.

2. Wake Forest has won 3 consecutive bowl games since a 42-28 loss to Wisconsin in the 2021 Duke's Mayo Bowl on 12/30/2020.

3. Wake Forest won 9+ games for just the 4th time in school history and first time since 2021.

4. Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert gets his 9th win, adding to his pervious school record for most wins by a first-year head coach.

5. Wake Forest beats a 5-7 team in a bowl game for the 2nd time in 5 years, previously a 38-10 win over Rutgers in the 2021 Gator Bowl on 12/31/2021. We opted out of that bowl game because of a significant COVID-19 outbreak, season-ending injuries, and not having enough available scholarship players to safely field a team for that game.

A 9-4 ACC team with a 3pt lead over a decimated 5-8 SEC team with 4+ minutes left in the game says the bottom half isn't that bad.

Several years ago, I distinctly remember the sips running their mouths about how bad Arkansas was, faced them in the Houston Bowl and got absolutely destroyed.

maybe. It just seems like the sec was very overrated this year. I think nil is levelling out the playing field with the p4 conferences

Thats cherry picking. You're even selecting a game from years ago.

The 2025 bowl season
Houston beats LSU
t.u beats Michigan
Virginia beats Mizzou
Illinois beats UT
Iowa beats Vanderbilt
Indiana beats Alabama (smoked)
Wake Forrest beats Mississippi St
Miami beats A&M

Oh... and Ole Miss beats Tulane lol

Do the math, the SEC got embarrassed

maybe.

comparing bowl team wins is a slippery slope with opt outs and conference tie-ins it is not apples to apples.

for example

Texas Bowl
Tie-in:
  • SEC vs Big 12
Typical position in pecking order:
  • Mid-tier bowl for both conferences
What that often ends up being:
  • SEC team 6th9th best
  • Big 12 team 3rd5th best
LSU 7-5 vs UH 9-3
Wake 8-4 vs MSST 5-7
Indiana 13-0 vs Bama 9-3
Iowa 8-4 vs Vandy 10-2 (outlier that proves the rule)

I do however agree, the SEC dominance is gone, NIL and portal have killed it for now, that kind of sucks, but is also kind of awesome

I agree with a lot of what you're saying here but hold on.
The 6-9 in the SEC vs 3-5 in Big 12?
The SEC should be around the same if not better in that scenario given which teams are now in that conference.

If those numbers were given in a SEC vs Big 10, then its very valid. But not the Big 12.

Opt outs? The Opt out debate would have to be placed under a microscope in each bowl matchup. Each program typically sees guys opting out every year in every bowl game. There are some scenarios however that are outliers. Meaning one team will have a larger percentage of guys unavailable (on average) and their opponent strikes it lucky where they drop below the average.

The orange bowl 2020 is an example where both teams saw Opt outs but the loser, and A&Ms rivals tried claiming A&M only won due to UNC losing guys. They also ignored that A&M lost some too. There wasnt a large enough discrepancy between UNC/A&M and their players opting out to make that sorta claim.
