All 4 QB's in remaining playoffs are portal additions, a look at their portal rankings;

MIAMI Carson Beck(#2-2025)
INDIANA Fernando Mendoza(#4-2025)
OREGON Dante Moore(#3-2024
OLE MISS Trinidad Chambliss(#60-2025)

Looks like having a good scouting department is one of the keys to success in the new world of college football.

No doubt about it.

If I were a college football coach, my skill position players would be coming from the portal. You have no idea what you're getting with a HS kid, it's a maybe, maybe not situation. Portal players have tape or, at minimum, have some experience playing at the next level. HS to CFB is a massive jump physically and mentally.

Where would Reed rank if he entered the portal?

Overall Portal Rank 2025:
3 Miami
4 Ole Miss
5 Oregon
25 Indiana

They paid a lot of money on portal players and chose well. On the flip side, there were a lot of teams that also paid a fortune on their roster in 2025 and have little to show for it. As for Elko, I think he has done relatively well in his first 2 portal classes; his portal additions typically meet or exceed expectations.

someone on Youtube did a look-back analysis of HS recruiting rankings. Composite 5-stars are supposedly sure things for NFL draft picks.

The most accurate predictions came in RB, WR, and DE/DL. The worst were OL and QB, iirc.

I'd take that into account when balancing recruiting vs portal shopping.

This is where the GM + Coach come into play just like the NFL. And we'll see if Cignetti continues with a solid season (I expect a drop-off) in 2026. But, he has been described as a "great evaluator of talent" and he's got the track record

He would get a ton of attention, but I don't think anyone hoping for Sorsby, Brown, Chambliss, or even Lagway would consider Reed on the same plain.

Just looking at the current official portal QB rankings on 247, I suspect Reed would be in the 10-13 range with the likes of Austin Simmons and Aiden Chiles. Personally, I would wager on coaching up the far superior physical talents of either of those aforementioned projects over Reed. We've already seen the skills of a turnover machine, inaccurate, and featherweight Reed.

I suspect Reed would ultimately get a good payday at an Arky type of school, while IMO, he's a Memphis Tiger.

Exactly. Just like in recruiting- need good coaching, development of players, and a good scheme mixed with some luck to advance to the "Final Four".

For example, wasn't LSU supposed to have had the number one Portal Class last year. And Texas Tech had perhaps one of the most expensive classes in terms of NIL. One blew up during the season (thanks in large part to the Ags invading Baton Rouge and eliminating their coach like the US military in Venezuela) and the other, due to their being in a cush conference, wasn't exposed until the playoffs.

The complexity with those four players is that there's no consistency in their journey.

Beck was forced from UGA & was dating a Miami basketball player at the time.

Dante Moore left UCLA and spent a year as QB2 before promoting to QB1 this year.

Mendoza went from Cal to Indiana in a consistent QB1 transition.

Ole Miss struck gold with Chambliss, who started his final season of eligibility as QB2.

That's a wild variance.

A wild variance at QB, yes, but all 4 schools recruited multiple positions aggressively in the portal. Miami's greatest strength is DL; that was from the portal. Ole Miss did strike gold with Chambliss, but they are also strong in all positions (almost all from the portal).

Hope we didn't spend all our money on fancy wheels when the engine and transmission are in questionable shape.

All for getting Cam, but not at the expense of at minimum 2 solid OL, run-stopping DT, LB, and arguably an RB.

My son plays hockey, and I've been saying for a few years now that IMO college hockey offers a peek at the future of college football.

In college hockey, only extremely gifted players jump straight from high school straight to D-I. Think of the Minnesota kids who've been playing since they were 3 yrs old and their high school teams could blow away most AAA 18U teams in the nation. Other than those select kids, a huge percentage of D-I hockey players filter through juniors and D-III first and are 20-21 yrs old before signing with a D-I team.

I totally see future successful D-I CFB teams leaning more and more into portals players filling larger percentages of their rosters.

there are over 50,000 ncaa football players. trying to manage the evaluation and recruiting is infinitely more difficult.

Same thing is happening with track and field. With limited scholarships they aren't as willing to take a HS kid. Even being highly ranked nationally doesn't necessarily get you into a power 4 D1 program. The G5 and lower tier D1s are still taking HS kids but id guess thatll diminish.

Isn't something they do already with h.s. recruits? They don't just blindly offer h.s. kids. I'm saying the staffs simply adjust their focus - the top 5* and 4* h.s. kids obviously gain attention from D-I scouts, but 3* and lower h.s. recruits get less attention from D-I colleges and it eventually becomes almost automatic that those kids start out in D-II or on teams in the Group of 5 leagues. In turn, the D-I colleges put more and more effort into evaluating college portal prospects.
