Why use a scholarship? Be an "NIL walk-on" and let the team have an "additional" scholarship for National signing day. Is that nonsensical thinking?
Being in TexAgs jail changes a man……..no, not really

because everyone on the roster gets a scholarship now. Walkons don't exist.

Of all the things keeping A&M from being successful on the football field, not having enough scholarships isn't one of them.

Soon enough, our 12th man kickoff team will just be scholarship guys with NIL deals <$50k

I believe it was a summer 2025 that it was allowed at NCAA level, although the SEC just voted last month to allow this for 2026 within the conference.

True, but do you think all D1 is funding 105 scholarships?

Along w/ 34 baseball, and all the non revenue sport roster limits?

I doubt Ags and any other public school is...

Pretty sure we said that we'd fund all scholarships. No partials in any sport anymore. Pretty sure the breakdown was posted

Gonna need a link. I've searched it and can't find anything definitive. Maybe we will find out when 25-26 spending is available.

We don't need 105 FB scholarship players.

Much less baseball, softball, soccer, swimming etc...

12th Man pays for all athletic scholarships. IRS established that 12th Man can't pay any NIL or revenue share. Revenue share has to be paid directly form the university and NIL has to come from direct payments from individuals or collectives.

Please show me where 12th Man is covering every scholarship available in every sport...

Shoot with NIL, they need to scrap scholarships in general.

The House settlement basically ended walk-ons. With the $2.8 billion in back-pay due to former athletes, and the NIL $20+ million dollar annual allotments, the universities cannot risk a future lawsuit in which walk-ons say they were not compensated properly. So, walk-ons were eliminated. Many schools grand-fathered in their current walk-ons. One other consequence is that academic scholarships are no longer allowed. My daughter is a D1 runner with a full ride National Merit Scholarship, which made her free to the program. After House, they were going to either kick her off the team or give her a lesser athletic scholarship (full ride, but no stipend). Fortunately they grand-fathered in their walk-ons. But it's kind of crazy that athletes can no longer receive academic scholarships.

Doesn't even happen in high school. If you're good, you are not allowed to fail. All my kids were in AP classes until the youngest one. She was telling me how they place the football players in classes with coaches who may fail the whole class for doing half of the work, but will not fail a football player who does nothing. Can't imagine how bad it is at an actual football school. Yeah, I know, not a new story, but I don't think it's possible for a starting 6A player to fail any more.

Welp according to Trev, we only funded 85 FB scholarships 25-26 when 105 were eligible.

Looks like they are blaming title 9 w/ the increase in baseball from 11.7 to 34, but increase in soccer of 14 to max, softball 13 to max, and maxed out women swimming and diving.

Yet we didn't max out football...

Things have been adopted slowly depending on when the house settlement occurred. I think the SEC might not have allowed 105 until now.

And just like revenue sharing I'm not sure how other schools are doing it. Trev chose this path of full scholarships based on that chart.

And yes title 9 is still part of the formula, it's still in effect or law or whatever you wanna call it

What is probably because programs just pay someone to go to school for them.

Scholarship/roster limits were not a part of the House settlement. NCAA decided on this separately. Could have been a product of house settlement, but was not mandated. SEC had nothing to say or do with it.

If we want 105 FB scholarships w/ title 9, we probably have to add women's gymnastics or rowing or tiddlywinks...
BQ_90

They needed the settlements as a starting point. The SEC i think set 105 limit for football, might have been following B1G, IDK. We're not adding new sport, I think equestrian is getting more for the offset.

It's all part of the money the TMF has to raise give to the AD to pay for it all.

Scholarships? Hahaha…how will they ever use those?
Gator92

Except, the only way to add more FB scholarships is to add more women sports. TMF only revenue is seat licenses and ticket sales plus donations made above and beyond. There is a limit to how much is charitable tax deductible. You can't expense tickets anymore even if you are giving them away to clients/customers. Some of the "seat licensees" can be a charitable tax deduction, but there are limits.

Better to make direct NIL payments and get a marketing/advertising expense that is 100% tax deductible v revenue...

They're going to 105 in football, they are not adding sports. If you don't believe it, then fine. But that's whats going to happen. The money can come from several sources, donors, tv revenue, ticket sales (which are donors), cutting media deals (which Trev did last summer), etc. Trev has been beating this drum since he got here that more revenue has to be generated.

One avenue we haven't done is sell a sponsorship on our playing fields/courts. I expect this is coming. Almost every SEC has one or two sponsors of their fields/courts. Arky has walmart/Tyson chicken, Auburn has yellowwood pine, OU has some Indian casino and so on

Several years ago I predicted that we would eventually see D1 divided into two groups, the "scholarship" division and the "NIL" division. NiL programs will not be allowed to offer scholarships, but will fund programs with NIL. They will no longer be subject to Title IX, at least the 85-105 women's scholarships required by football. NIL will kill most women's sports at the NIL schools, unless they can come up with their own NIL money (and many will).

There are some other models that would work...such as...you don't get to keep NIL money until you've paid the value of the scholarship. This would be based on actual cost of attendance, which would keep schools from inflating the numbers they report. Also, a significant portion of NIL could be paid only upon graduation. If you transfer, you forfeit the deferred amount.
