Lou Holtz health update: Read family's statement on legendary coach
Quote:

A couple of days ago, news emerged that legendary Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz had been placed in hospice care. On Saturday, Jan. 31 his family provided an update.

Kevin Holtz, his son, posted an update on the 1988 national champion coach on his Facebook account on Saturday, confirming Lou Holtz is in hospice care.

"The Holtz family, Luanne Altenbaumer, Skip Holtz, Liz Holtz Messaglia, share the difficult news that our father, Coach Lou Holtz, is presently facing a health challenge," Kevin Holtz posted on Facebook. "While this is a challenging time, our focus is on maintaining his comfort, quality of life and care in his Orlando home.

Lou Holtz had a love hate relationship with the Aggies when he coached at Arkansas and Notre Dame

While Holtz often praised the atmosphere at Kyle Field, he was notoriously critical of the "Spirit of Aggieland" ritual where the entire Texas A&M team would line up on the field for the playing of the school song before kickoff

Holtz's primary issue was not with the song itself, but with the logistics and gamesmanship of the kickoff:

Holtz argued that having the entire opposing team standing on the field during the pre-game ceremonies was a form of intimidation and a violation of standard field etiquette.

He frequently complained that the Aggie players would linger on the field, which interfered with his own team's ability to finish their final warm-ups or take their positions for the start of the game.

He viewed the tradition as a way for Texas A&M to "claim" the entire field before the game even started, essentially forcing the visiting team to wait for the Aggies to clear out.

This frustration was most vocal during his time at Arkansas and Notre Dame.

* The 1988 Cotton Bowl: When Holtz led Notre Dame against Texas A&M, the pre-game "Spirit" was a major point of contention. Holtz reportedly expressed that the spectacle was designed to whip the crowd into a frenzy while physically obstructing the visiting team's pre-game flow.

During his tenure at Arkansas, Holtz often traded barbs with A&M fans and officials over what he perceived as the "excessive" nature of their home-field traditions, which he felt crossed the line from school spirit into tactical disruption.

In later years as an analyst, Holtz would often recount these stories with a mix of respect for the Aggie fans and lingering annoyance at the "chaos" of the pre-game timing.

O my Lord and Savior, support Lou Holtz in his last hour by the strong arms of Thy sacraments and the fragrance of thy consolations. Let Thy absolving words be said over him, and the holy oil sign and seal him; and let Thine own body be his food and Thy blood his sprinkling; and let Thy Mother Mary come to him, and his angel whisper peace to him, and Thy glorious saints and his own dear patrons smile on him, that in and through them all he may die as he desired to live, in Thy Church, in Thy faith, and in Thy love.

Amen.

I have mixed feelings about Holtz as a coach. He was a winner wherever he coached, but was it good coaching or something else. If I remember correctly, every team he coached at was put on probation the year after he left for transgressions that happened during his tenure. Having said that, a company I used to work for hired him as a motivational speaker- enjoyed going to listen to him speak.

Holtz is a great man.
He came out pregame during the Aggie/ND football game this fall and he looked so so frail. He has had an amazing life and impacted a lot of young men for the better.

World needs more men like Coach!

Not saying you are wrong but I have a hard time believing that the NCAA would ever put Notre Dame on probation regardless of what violations they might have been caught doing.

Actually - Minnesota, Notre Dame, & South Carolina all experienced probation from his era of being coach. I'm not really sure why the NCAA had it out for him vs. what was happening within other programs.

Holtz appeared to be a master of "looking the other way", while putting enormous pressure on those around him to do "whatever it takes" to win. Frankly, he did a lot of things during his tenure at Arkansas that rubbed me the wrong way so I did not hold him in as high regard as others did. From running out on the field and literally throwing a tantrum during a game at Kyle Field (and not getting penalized for it), to making jokes on Carson about wondering "how much A&M was paying their players", when those in the know in the SWC knew that Arkansas was every bit as dirty as A&M and SMU in those days (in both basketball and football). Yes, I read "Under The Tarnished Dome" so that influenced my opinion as well. Just not my kind of role model.

When he benched 3 of his star players in the Orange Bowl against OU for breaking team rules - and then crushed the Sooners.

Spot on, Coach!

interesting that Holtz would have issues with A&M during his Arkansas tenure

I believe he was 6-1 vs. the Ags with the Hogs

and 8-2 overall vs. A&M

may have the best coaching winning % vs. A&M (10 games minimum)

The NCAA put Notre Dame football on probation as recently as 2021 for recruiting violations.

A few years before that Notre Dame had to vacate like two years of wins including that year they got boat raced by Alabama in the championship.

Me too. Seems like a good guy and I liked him on ESPN with Mark May back in the day. He played along with the bits and tried to have some fun on air. And because of that, I don't feel like too much of an ass because I get the giggles imagining Lou trying to pronounce the word "hospice" without spitting on Mark May. #MMB5G@Pitt
