Joey Freshwater treating ole miss like a sidepiece who wouldn't return his calls

The already contentious relationship between Lane Kiffin and the University of Mississippi just got a little thornier.

In an interview with Vanity Fair for a profile published on Monday, May 11, the first-year LSU coach, who spent the previous six seasons at Ole Miss, said he faced difficulties attracting top recruits to the Rebels due to the university's sordid racial history and the longtime connection it had with Confederate symbols.

Kiffin told the publication that elite prospects would tell him "Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren't letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi."

"That doesn't come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana," Kiffin said. "Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus's diversity feels so great: 'It feels like there's no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that's the real world.'"

Here is the best line from Joey:

During a conversation the next day, Kiffin told Vanity Fair that he hoped his comment "comes across respectful to Ole Miss….

It's unfortunate people even feel this way in 2026. Maybe it can be a wake up call to that area. But probably not

It's not just that people feel this way, it's often the reality. Vidor TX is still essentially a sundown town. There are others in TX as well.

Baton Rouge, LA, has a significantly higher murder rate than Oxford, MS. Recent data indicates Baton Rouge consistently ranks among the highest in the nation with a homicide rate around 4251 per 100,000 residents, while Oxford's violent crime rate is significantly lower.

Kiffin is lying. Kiffin and Freeze both recruited great at OleMiss.

Also just look at Bama and OU recruiting the past few decades. Obviously most recruits don't care.

The "Tigers" nickname for LSU's athletic teams, adopted in the 1890s, was inspired by the Louisiana Tigers, a nickname given to certain Confederate units during the Civil War. This name originated with a New Orleans volunteer company called the Tiger Rifles, part of Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat's battalion, which fought with ferocity in battles like First Manassas in 1861. The nickname later expanded to refer to many Louisiana troops in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The tiger symbol also came from the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, which had a logo featuring a snarling tiger since the 1830s.

What a lying POS. Literally not one recruit EVER in his time said anything about that, ever. And t never happened under Freeze either.

Jefferson Davis, former POTCSA, was offered the first Presidency of TAMC when it was founded, how ever did we recruit under Jackie and RC and now Elko?!?!?!?!! The horror…..

You think Davis being offered the A&M job 150 years ago has any comparison to Kiffin's comments above

Might want to tell the black people that live there. I am sure they would like to know.

Being from that area, I can promise you that they couldn't care less about outsiders opinions. They'll feel this way forever. They just tell folks that unless you've lived in Mississippi or are from there, you can't understand and they don't care that you can't understand.

He's trying to hurt Ol Miss recruiting to the advantage of LSU. As stated, he recruited just fine when he was there. They just don't have as deep pockets as LSU or the larger schools have.
