Hydration roll call: water, electrolytes, or pure stubbornness?

With Texas heat ramping up, dehydration can sneak up on you fast especially if you're working outside, exercising, golfing, fishing, at the lake, or spending any amount of time in the sun.

A lot of people think they're just tired, worn out, or "feeling off" when they're actually dehydrated.
Common signs include:
  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • muscle cramps
  • low energy
What's something people underestimate about Texas heat?
And what's your go-to recovery after a long day outside? Water, electrolytes, IV therapy, sports drinks, salty food… what actually works for you?

Wake Island, circa June, 1969.

I was a new copilot on a USAF C-141. After a ten hour flight from Travis AFB, CA., we landed at night at Wake.. Another crew took the plane further west to Clark AB, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, or wherever the cargo was needed.

After 8 or 9 hours crew rest at Wake, the aircraft commander suggested we go for a jog along the beach before eating lunch. Fine with me, I thought. It was late morning, light breeze, temp was, maybe, mid 80s. Didn't seem all that hot. But we were used to northern California's low humidity.

We had started out strong, but soon felt the high humidity and the sun beating down. Wake is only 19 degrees of latitude north of the equator. Soon, we were feeling it. I recall singing songs to myself to take my mind off the heat. Then I couldn't recall lyrics, and all that came out was gibberish. The aircraft commander wasn't any better. We stopped and walked back to the transient aircrew quarters.

We were lucky to be young and healthy, and able to recognize that we had exceeded our limits. We had about 12 more hours to recuperate before our flight out of Wake. And we needed every minute of it.
