I am slowly putting together a list of guns that my father has that he is giving to me. I will be removing the ones that I want to keep from the list and possibly selling the rest.

He put together a handwritten list of them and I have been trying to translate. He doesnt really want to get back in to the safe to get clarification for me. (writes like a doctor and cant read his own writing)

here is what I have gathered so far with my translation

If anyone is interested in anything, let me know and I will keep your info for when I finally get them in hand. Im still working on value, and would love any help on this.

Be careful with this. I think You are allowed to sell only so many guns a year before you are considered a "dealer". I'm not a lawyer and I don't know all the laws. Just be mindful

There is no hard number for selling firearms. You are not allowed to be "in the business" of selling firearms without a license. Now, what that means is pretty amorphous, but getting rid of inherited guns that you don't like wouldn't be it.

And OP, I'd be interested in the P38. You can email my username at yahoo.

What I was able to find with a google search. I'm sure someone with more knowledge can answer this question.

Under federal law, there is no specific numerical limit on how many guns a private, unlicensed seller can sell. Instead, the legality hinges on intent: if you sell firearms to "predominantly earn a profit" rather than to liquidate or hobby-collect, you may be considered "engaged in the business" and require a Federal Firearms License (FFL).
Key Considerations for Private Sellers:
  • Intent over Quantity: Even selling a few guns can be illegal without a license if the goal is to make a profit.
  • "Engaged in the Business": The ATF defines this as a pattern of sales aimed at profit, which can include regular participation in gun shows, listing items online for sale, or selling quickly after acquisition.
  • Prohibited Persons: It is a federal crime to knowingly sell a firearm to someone who is prohibited from owning one (e.g., a convicted felon).
  • State Laws: While federal law is lenient, many states have enacted universal background check laws that require private transfers to go through an FFL, nullifying "private" sales.
For those in Texas, for example, private sales of personal collections are generally permitted without a background check, provided the seller does not know the buyer is prohibited. To avoid illegal dealing, sales should be rare, occasional, and for the purpose of improving a personal collection, not as a primary source of income.

This was some Biden ATF garbage where they were harassing private individuals who just wanted to offload some guns and obviously weren't otherwise "in the business." I don't think it's happening anymore.

ATF says you are allowed to liquidate a collection and/or an inherited collection.

Yeah, but there's no limit to how many you can lose to the bottom of the lake.

Mucho. In looking at your list I wanted to point out a couple of points on the listed Sharps.
Christian's Sharps built firearms in Hartford CT from circa 1855 - 1874. During those years Sharps did not build a Model 1862 breech falling rifle with a barrel address of Hartford CT.
However in 1862 he partnered up with William Hankins to produce the Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Carbine. This was a unique looking sliding barrel single shot. It looks nothing like Sharps breech falling block action rifles that everyone identifies Sharps with.
On the right side of the frame it will be marked " Sharps/&/Hankins/Philada"
I am attaching a picture to help you identify it.
Also. In regards to the 1866. It is actually called the Sharps New Model 1866 Military Rifle. It was the only Model 1866 Sharps produced. It is extremely rare! I mean extremely rare. Made for 1 year only. They are so rare that values are not listed in most publications.
It can be identified by it being a .50 Cal Rimfire. The lock plate will be marked "R.S. Lawrence" and "New Model 1866". It will have a 30" Blued barrel with barrel markings of "SHARP'S MANUFG. CO"
If you truly have one of these you need to have it professionally appraised by well known Sharps aficionado.

Here is a link to a rare Sharps Model 1866 Military rifle that was in a Rock Island Auction in 2011.

As it says ….few are known to even exist.

For your info.
