Not a rule. Morche just wears #0. Our goalkeepers are #0, #11, & #44. Outside of international play, following squad numbers isn't really required.

"Why does the clock go down instead of up?"

I don't think it is consistent. I briefly watched Georgia game last night and it was going up.

The clock is not consistent. The NCAA recommends that the clock count down, but it's not mandatory. Either way, it's required to stop when appropriate. And regardless of what the scoreboard clock might display, box scores are based on the traditional FIFA clock counting up.

The NCAA was originally going to adopt the standard timekeeping protocol for this season (ref keeps official time, stadium clock goes from 0 - 45 and 45 - 90, etc.), but ended up tabling that when the new rules were adopted in April. Not sure why it was tabled, but hopefully it is just a delay.

Here's the proposal that was put forth in March:

Quote:

"In discussions with match officials, as well as the coaching community, the opportunity to align with FIFA rules regarding added time makes common sense for our game," said John Trask, chair of the committee and men's soccer coach at Wisconsin. "Match officials worldwide are responsible for administrating the length of a soccer game, and it will be a significant enhancement to college soccer."

All rules proposals must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss soccer rules changes via teleconference April 25.

The committee also is recommending that clocks in the stadium or on the field, where possible, start at zero and run up to 45 minutes, then run from 45 to 90 minutes, rather than counting down.

Currently, the stadium or field clocks keep the official time of the match. Public address announcers also count down the final 10 seconds of a half or overtime period, which would no longer be applicable if approved.
Committee members agreed this current system leads to gamesmanship and chaos where teams can use delay tactics at the end of matches.

"Significant enhancement".... I do not see how it enhances anything. TBH the fifa time keeping and stoppage time is stupid. Stopping the clock when it needs to be stopped is how it should be. There is no more gaming the clock, probably less, with the college time rules than with fifa time rules.

If the NCAA really wants to align with FIFA rules, why not go back to 30 minutes of overtime (extra time)? The 60 minutes of extra time in postseason matches was a little ridiculous, but the rationale for trimming 30 to 20 was to reduce injuries. Does 10 fewer minutes really make that much of a difference? Considering the substitution rules, I think 30 minutes is more than appropriate, not to mention it would reduce the number of regular-season ties and postseason shootouts.

Golden goal? Well, that's another story. I think sudden death overtime is something Americans really like, but soccer fans have gotten used to it no longer being used. (A notable exception: the ref in the 2006 UNC-A&M game who let the match go the full 110 minutes even though the Aggies scored during the second OT period. And that wasn't even the season the rule changed.)
