Aggies Advance to Sweet 16, Topple No. 8 UNC, 1-0 - Texas A&M Athletics - 12thMan.com

CLEMSON, South Carolina The No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies upended the No. 8 North Carolina Tar Heels, 1-0, Friday afternoon in an NCAA Championship second round contest at Riggs Field. With the victory, the Aggies advance to their 14th Sweet Sixteen.

Texas A&M handed the Tar Heels just their 11th loss all-time in NCAA Championship play and sent North Carolina home before the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the 34-year history of the tournament. The 21-time NCAA champion had made it to the Sweet Sixteen every season the NCAA has sponsored a Division I Women's Soccer Championship (since 1982).

The Aggies scored the match's lone goal in the 28th minute. Stephanie Malherbe served a long ball to Ally Watt, but a North Carolina defender corralled it just outside the left elbow of the penalty box. Watt wrangled the ball away from the Tar Heel backline and charged into the box. The mercurial forward sent a sharp cross to the right post. Emily Bates, sprinting towards the goal, distracted the keeper with her dummy run allowing Watt's ball to bounce unabated into the right side netting.

Danielle Rice notched her third career Aggie shutout as the backline wall of Karlie Mueller, Kendall Ritchie, Ashlynn Harryman, Margaret Schmidt, McKayla Paulson and Grace Wright and midfield help from Emily Bates, Kate Hajdu, Mikaela Harvey and Malherbe held the Tar Heels to just three shots-on-goal for the match and Rice, who also grabbed seven corners and crosses out of the air, made solid saves on all three offerings.

North Carolina owned advantages in shots (14-7) and corner kicks (5-0), but the Aggies earned the edges in shots-on-goal (4-3) and the scoreboard.

The Tar Heels' best scoring chance came with 33 minutes remaining in the second half when Alexa Newfield hit the left post from 10 yards out. But the Aggies' defense quickly pounced on the carom and cleared it to the midfield.

Watt nearly tacked on a second goal on two occasions in the second half. With 30 minutes remaining, she beat three defenders around the right flank and sent a ball across the face of the goal from eight yards out going just a foot wide to the left. With 13 minutes remaining, Watt chased down a long ball, beat one defender, and struck a ball from the right edge of the penalty box that goalkeeper Lindsay Harris had to make a leaping save to keep from going to the left upper 90.

The Aggies return to action on Sunday when they battle either Clemson or Ole Miss in a 12 pm Central match in an effort to earn their sixth Elite Eight appearance.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES

Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match
"This says a lot about the types of kids we have on this team. They're a team that can step up to a big occasion. It's great to get another win in the NCAA tournament and this one came against a legendary program a North Carolina program that we obviously we have the most respect for. What Anson Dorrance has done for women's soccer is amazing. So this was a huge win for us. This is a Sweet 16 spot we've really had to battle for, so it's special. Fourteen times we've been here, now we have to regroup, see who we will play against and try to get to the Elite Eight."

On getting ready for the next round
"I told the players, afterward, to enjoy this. It was a fantastic effort. We got a really good goal by Ally Watt with the run-over by Emily Bates. Dani (Rice), the backline, the midfield, everybody from front to back did a good job of winning balls and making North Carolina fight for everything. I don't know what else to say but 'We're smiling inside.' No matter who we play on Sunday, we know we have a tough task, so we'll enjoy this tonight and then tomorrow it's time to get our mind in the right place for the next match."

Freshman forward Ally Watt
On advancing to the next round
"It's great to advance to next round, especially beating a team like North Carolina. They're legendary. We came in with the mentality that we can beat them and we did."

On her goal
"Stephanie (Malherbe) served a ball over the top. The defender got it, but I just fought to get it from her. I tried to cross the ball in, but it found the side netting with that dummy from Emily Bates, distracting the keeper. A goal's a goal and it was great to be on top. Then we just had to fight them off the rest of the game. They were pretty relentless, but I'm pretty proud of the way Dani (Rice) and the backline played. They were huge."

Aggies Put No. 1 UNC on its Heels with 4-3 Upset - Texas A&M Athletics - 12thMan.com

DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Shea Groom netted the game-winning goal in overtime as the Texas A&M soccer team upset No. 1 North Carolina, 4-3, Sunday at Koskinen Stadium in the final day of the Duke Nike Classic.
A furious comeback by the never-say-die Aggies (4-4-0) in the final 20 minutes of the match closed a 1-3 deficit for A&M (5-1-0) and sent the game into overtime, tied 3-3, saw Groom finish off the No. 1 Tar Heels 30 seconds into the final period.

"Obviously, I'm really happy for our girls," head coach G Guerrieri said. "I just couldn't be more proud of them for the fight that they put in today. To be able to beat North Carolina after being down two goals in the second half and to come back to score 3 in 21 minutes for the win was a remarkable statement by our players."
The Aggies exemplified a winner's attitude and never quit, outshooting top-ranked UNC 20-13 throughout the match.

In a determined effort to rally after North Carolina netted the first goal in the sixth minute, the Aggies created several pressure situations in the A&M attacking half. Senior Merritt Mathias led the attack, firing off a shot in the 25th minute from point-blank range at a scrambling UNC goalkeeper. The keeper grabbed the save but Mathias was back three minutes later with a similar shot from eight yards that slammed into the body of a defender. The senior forward put two of three shots on frame in the duration of the match, and assisted two goals.

The Aggies' hard work paid off in the 32nd minute when freshman Annie Kunz netted the equalizer. Freshman Bianca Brinson set up the play, bringing the ball into the A&M attacking third and slipping Kunz a pass in the box.

Kunz crashed in on the goal and fired a volley at the UNC goalkeeper who dove to make a save. The Aggie forward wasted no time when the ball popped back out of the keeper's hands, kicking the rebound into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
With just three minutes left in the first period, the Tar Heels again took the lead after a corner kick. A&M goalkeeper Rene McDermott dove when the ball was knocked down in the six-yard box by a UNC player but the ball popped out of her grip in the tangle and North Carolina was able to send a kick into the back of the net for the lead going into halftime.

"From a defensive standpoint, we were disappointed to give up three goals on set pieces, but our team defending all over the field was pretty solid all day long," Guerrieri said. "The back four had great performances to block and deny scoring opportunities. Same thing with our forwards and midfielders, being able to keep pressure on the ball and keep North Carolina out of the most dangerous situations."
The second half started with the same high level of play by both teams, keeping the intensity in the second half. In the 48th minute, the referee awarded UNC another corner kick that Tar Heel defender Taylor Ramirez finished to put Carolina up 3-1.

A&M never lost heart, though. In the 71st minute a scoring opportunity arose when a Tar Heels defender was pressured and dispossessed by Mathias, who sent a cross from the end line to junior Nora Skelton, at the edge of the six-yard box.

Skelton one-timed a shot that was tapped back as the UNC goalkeeper dove to block. With two Tar Heels now guarding the goal, the Aggie forward regained control of the rebound and scored on a second shot to narrow the score to a 3-2 UNC lead.

Rarely allowing the ball in its defensive third for the majority of the time remaining in regulation play, A&M fought to find the goal and earned three corner kicks in the next seven minutes. On the third attempt, Mathias' lob found freshman Meghan Streight on the far side of the goal. Streight headed the game-tying ball into the back of the net to push the game to a draw for the second time.

The Tar Heels couldn't get past the swarming Aggie defense as the clock ran out on regulation play with the game tied at 3-3. A throw in at the beginning of the 10-minute overtime period was won by senior Megan Majewski, who quickly slipped a pass to Monogue who then turned and slotted the ball behind the UNC back line to the speedy Groom. The freshman forward zoomed past defenders and swung right in the box to go one-on-one against Sieloff. Groom's golden goal zipped past the keeper just inside the left post and gave the Aggies their second victory all-time against the 21-time national champion Tar Heels.

"I think we're probably part of a really small club, the club that can say that they were down to North Carolina, 3-1, and were able to come back and win, 4-3," Guerrieri said. "UNC is such a talented and well coached team. It's quite an accomplishment for our young talented team."

This match was also only the second time in UNC history that the team gave up three consecutive goals. The last time the Aggies defeated the Tar Heels was in 2006, for the first time in A&M history. McDermott had five saves in her fourth start for the Aggies.

The Aggies will return home Friday to host Baylor in the conference opener at Ellis Field. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. A 12:30 p.m. game against Fordham on Sunday will close out the weekend. To learn more about Texas A&M soccer log on to AggieAthletics.com.

Aggies Top Heels in Double Overtime, 1-0 - Texas A&M Athletics - 12thMan.com
August 25, 2006

The No. 9 Texas A&M soccer team (1-0-0) started their 2006 soccer season in style, defeating 18-time national champion North Carolina (0-1-0), 1-0, in overtime before a NCAA regular season record-setting crowd of 8,204 at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
Ashlee Pistorius was playing in behind the Tar Heel backline after a hard tackle by junior midfielder Amy Berend nearly 30 yards from the UNC goal. Berend's pass put the Aggies? Soccer Buzz Preseason All-American in a one-on-one situation against the Carolina keeper. Pistorius then coolly netted a shot into the lower back corner of the net to send the entire stadium into pandemonium.

The top-10 Aggies controlled every statistical category on the night, outshooting No. 3 UNC 15-13, and earned more corner kicks, 8-2. Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Arnold recorded the shutout for the Aggies in her first official collegiate start.

"I am really proud of all our players," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "You could see our team get stronger and stronger over the course of the game. I am especially happy for our four great defenders (Linda Pierson, Lauren Pfister, Micah Stephens and Emily Peterson) who really kept the game in control."

This is the first win over North Carolina for the Aggies, but the schedule ahead for the team doesn't get any easier. A&M will be back on the field this Sunday afternoon against the University of Texas - San Antonio and will then start a difficult run of games against No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Santa Clara, No. 8 Penn State and No.15 Illinois.

"This was a true squad victory for us tonight," added Guerrieri. "We were able to make some quality substitutions throughout the night, and we never saw a dip in our play. I think it's a great testament for our players to look as fit and composed against such a great team as the Tar Heels."

Junior midfielder Paige Carmichael was named the State Farm Player of the Game for her tireless effort in the heart of the Aggie lineup.

The freshmen in that 2011 win went to the College Cup as seniors. We had lost to Duke 7-2 I think 2 days before that win. That game was played at Duke.

In our last six meetings, 3 wins and 3 losses?

UNC is notorious for their high pressure. They sub a ton of "fresh legs" throughout the game. We will have to withstand their pressure for 90 minutes.

I remember the first few years of Aggie soccer, I think they played UNC a couple of times at Meyer Park in Klein. I know I went to one of them in 1996. Program has come a long way since those days.
I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'
