I've been inspired by all the Tournaments on the Entertainment board recently where posters voted to determine the top genre/movies/TV shows, etc. I'd like to attempt this same thing but with soccer. I am going to try and model it from the many Entertainment threads so please bear with me as I try and figure the logistics out. These first one might be a little boring due to the decades being discussed, but I'm sure it'll get a little more exciting once we get into the aughts and teens.

My vision is to do one of these for the "recent" decades for club teams and national teams. Then we'll get all of the quarterfinalists and put together a final tournament and in the end we'll get what TexAgs posters think is the best team of all-time.

For clubs we will only look at individual seasons, like the 98-99 Manchester United team. You can also nominate the 93-94 team if you want. Things to consider are record, trophies won, collection of talent, coach, etc..

This thread is for nominations for the 1980's and 90's Club team and will include teams across the world from the 80-81 season to the 98-99 season. I'll need your help here as I don't know much when it comes to these decades of soccer. I will wait a day or two to put together this tournament from the nominations I have received. Opening nomination is my massive supporter nomination: 1984-1985 Everton. Won English top flight (then first division) and European Cup Winner's Cup.

Neville Southall, Graeme Sharp, Gary Stevens

Obvious choice that should be at the top of the list (and it pains me to admit it):

1998-99 Manchester United. Treble (EPL, FA Cup, Champions League)

David Beckham, Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke. Several others on that roster that could be on this list (for example, Peter schmichel; aside: can someone confirm he and Kasper are the only father son duo with EPL winners medals?)

My knowledge of 80s club soccer is abysmal. My knowledge of 90s club soccer is only slightly better. But Cruyff's Barca teams of the 90s have to be in the discussion. They not only won, they were the foundation of a revolution in soccer. He's responsible for turning Barca into what it is today. And Barca's philosophy and style has influenced countless clubs and international teams globally.

83-84 - Liverpool - 1st division champ, European Cup champ - Souness, Rush, Dalglish

91-92 - FC Barcelona - La Liga champ, Euro Cup champ - Laudrup, Koeman, Busquets

95-96 - Juventus - European Cup Champ - Vialli, Del Piero, Deschamps

97-98 - Real Madrid - Champions League Champ - Roberto Carlos, Raul, Seedorf

88-89 - AC Milan - Euro Cup Champ - Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten

86-87 - Bayern Munich - Bundesliga, Euro Cup runner-up - Matthaus, Hoenes, Rummenigge

Okay, I am up to 9 nominations. Think we can get to 16 for a 4 round bracket? I figured on this go around, I will use a scoring system to seed them from 1 to 16 based off results. In the instance of a tie breaker, I will just make the decision on who gets the higher seed.

Any teams from the 1st division in England worth mentioning from 85-91 when they were banned from Euro competition?

The only Liverpool team I'd throw out there is the '83-84 team led by Ian Rush in his prime. They finished first in the league, won the league cup and beat Roma in the European League Championship.

Some other good teams through the 1980s but the 1990s were very unkind to the club.

Yep, 83-84 would be the best LFC team I'd tag in that run.

Two notes looking at historical records cords from that Era:

In the 20ish year run from about 73-91 Liverpool finished outside the top 2 once. (5th)

With no more nominations, I will drop one team from the 8 that were nominated and start the tournament sometime over the weekend.

After this one is over we will move over to the 00's and 10's.
