Haven't seen this discussed on here but saw on Instagram that FIFA has experimented with some rule changes at a youth tournament. Some interesting stuff.

1. Unlimited subs (I think no way this happens at the senior level)

2. Restarts on the touch line with the feet rather than a throw (pretty radical - don't think I like this)

3. Yellow card gets a five minute suspension (don't hate it but feels pretty harsh)

4. 30 minute halves with the clock stopped when it's out of play

This one to me is the one that's worth really considering and I think I really like it. Whether 30 or 35 or 40 is the proper number I don't know. But the end of games a big part of strategy is to waste time and I have never talked to a single fan of the game who likes it. I think there is near-universal agreement that the game would be better without fake injuries and slow substitutions. I would still want to allow for a final play to develop and not end games at a hard stop. Like where a team scores a goal but it doesn't count because the buzzer went off. But I think some version of this would be a big improvement.

If you start allowing the clock to be stopped, TV networks will start demanding commercial breaks. They're one of the biggest sources of income for soccer teams so they will make it happen given the chance

Ive seen discussion of just allowing the throwin to be allowed using any form, as long as your feet are behind the line. I dont mind that idea, but would need to see it tested some.

I think rule 4 might seem good to some on paper, but it would actually ruin the end of games, imo.

Kickins have been tried multiple times

With no offsides it would lead to a complete change of the sport

Yeah, I don't like any of those.

I think it could ruin the end of games if not executed properly.

I think a better way of doing it would be to actually go 1:1 on stoppage time. As it stands right now only one second gets added on for every 10 seconds you waste so there's a lot of incentive for shenanigans.

1) Please no. But I do really like 5 and am glad the Bundesliga kept it this year.

2) Torn on this. I think it was Van Basten who was calling for this a few years ago and his point is a valid one. When you're in the final third, the attacking team is a clear loser on throw ins because it's 10 vs 11. I forget the stats but these situations result in turnovers at a high rate. A kick-in keeps the advantage with the team that had the advantage in the first place so, I'd like it. I'd hate it on the opposite end, though. And honestly, I kinda like the notion that the "sideline is an extra defender" so I could live without this change even in attacking situations.

3) I like the idea of a sin-bin. I've always thought sending off is too harsh. But I don't really like it for 1st yellows. Those are warnings and I like them as that. I'd rather see a sin-bin for the 2nd and even subsequent yellows and only send off a player for a straight red that risks player safety (for straight reds that don't involve player safety I'd double the sin-bin time).

4) I'd be tempted if I knew TV wouldn't go to commercial but they would. I'd rather see strict flopping enforcement and more yellows for time wasting (I'd be tempted to make the sin-bin time carry over to the next game). I'd also like to see a very strict removal off the pitch for all players who are "clearly in pain" on the ground. These poor guys deserve to get proper treatment and evaluation on the sideline, don't you agree?

IDK, they usually seem to get excellent treatment right on the field. With few exceptions their pain and injury seems to end after a period of consultation with the medic.

1) I have finally acquiesced and decided that 3 + 1 for extra time is the right number. Unlimited subs will ultimately turn players into something closer to shift work like they do in the NHL. It won't lead to straight line changes but players will be tuned athletically to have a 10-15 minute ultra-high work rate followed by several minutes of recovery.

2) I am ok with not changing throw ins.

3) I think this is a good idea. Giving the ref a little more leeway and punishment with more teeth will keep a game from getting lopsided because of a soft red at the 25th minute. Something like warning, caution (5 minutes), caution (10 minutes), expulsion.

4) The powers that be in the TV industry will flash too much cash and commercials will be inevitable if this rule is implemented. Perhaps a compromise would be to have an official (and more visible) extra time keeping system.

I agree with your take on #4. Come up with a way to remove incentives for time wasting. Show a clock that ticks up for extra time after goals, during VAR reviews, stoppages for injuries, and substitutions. Time wasting from throw ins and free kicks are handled pretty effectively as is and aren't the problem.

Basically a hockey like system of misconduct with referee discretion.
