Texas A&M is set to play Sam Houston State University this Friday at 7PM as the Aggies continue their 4 game homestand. This game will be streamed on SEC+ and attendance is free for anyone that has a ticket to Saturday's football game.
Surprisingly these neighboring schools have only faced each other 3 times in soccer, with the most recent meeting coming in 2009. A&M is 3-0 in matches with SHSU and has outscored the Bearkats 23-0.
The Bearkats began their soccer program in 2003 and have had just 2 winning seasons in their history. They went 10-6-5 in 2015 and finished last season 7-6-1. This season, the Bearkats have officially moved to the WAC (from the Southland Conference) along with Abilene Christian, Lamar, and Stephen F Austin. Sam Houston is not expected to compete for a WAC title or advance to the postseason. SFA and Utah Valley are the teams to watch there.
There's not a whole lot to say about a lesser team in a lesser division, especially when they play a team like A&M. Sam Houston has been the punching bag for other quality programs early in the season. Their record is even at 2-2, but those losses have been resounding. Losses came to Rice (0-4) and LSU (0-8). Wins have come over Grambling (2-1) and McNeese (1-0).
Sophomore forward Landri Townsend (#12) has 2 of SHSU's 3 goals, so she certainly stands out as someone to watch.
Abby DeLozier has seen most of the time in goal for the Bearkats, allowing 9 goals while making 33 saves. She replaced previous starter Tatum Krueger in goal just 45 minutes into the season after Krueger gave up 4 goals to Rice on 7 shots on goal. DeLozier finished the game allowing no more goals and totalling 8 saves. Luck ran out for DeLozier against LSU as she allowed 8 goals on 22 SOG.
This is a perfect tune up game that comes at a great time for the Aggies as they have run through a gauntlet of top ten teams. This game will allow them to spread minutes out and get some practice. It should be a fun game for the forwards. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of those players shine up top.
