Apparently Brazil's match vs Argentina was suspended after 7 minutes because federal officials stormed the field to arrest Argentinian players for breaking Covid registration rules. They apparently didn't inform Brazil that they were based in England...which apparently is a federal crime during Covid. I read that the Brazilian Feds tried to arrest the players in the dressing rooms but the Argentinian officials locked them out, so they did it during the game.

I can't help but wonder if COVID was the excuse to play f*** f*** games.

Because surely the Covid threat from European based players is more imminent than from their own country

Why wait for the game to start? Why not do it when they are warming up?

I saw reports that AFA, CFB and CONMEBOL met well
before the match but didn't reach a resolution and that Brazilian authorities tried to get to the players before the match and were locked out of the dressing room.

I'm partly in the camp that this was CFB playing some gamesmanship. They had 8 or 9 players out and were hoping for an Argentine forfeit or that they would have to pull the players off the field and burn subs 5 minutes in. Instead they got CONMEBOL ****show that would make CONCACAF proud.

I agree with the gamesmanship angle.

The dressing rooms being locked doesn't explain why they sat there and watched the players warm up for however long that takes (an hour?) and did nothing, but waited until the game started.

My bet. Both sides were to blame in this ****housery. There are no good guys here. However, it is hilarious and for that I thank them all.

Here's a tweet of the supposed sequence of events. I'm not sure why the Brazilian government would give its OK and Anvisa would still veto it.

An underlying issue is that several English clubs (Liverpool/Man city) refused to release their really good Brazilian players due to the fact that Brazil was on the "red-list". At the same time, other English clubs freely released their Argentinian players.

I'm certain the Brazilian FA was so butt hurt about that issue that the game was doomed from that point on.

It's all the EPL teams that aren't releasing teams to go play in countries on the "red list."

The most bizarre scene, is that it appeared that Neymar and Messi were acting as the nation's representatives to discuss with the Brazilian officials.

The whole thing seems like a big show up and f you to Argentina

The problem (from the Brazilian perspective) is that Brazilian players were banned from coming home to Brazil, but their opponents received players from the same league for a match played in Brazil.

If the goal is to limit the spread of covid, than all players should be restricted from entering a red list country. The Brazilian government and FA likely feel like rules are being unequally enforced at their expense. I wouldn't be surprised if Bolsonaro even got involved.

Hmm I thought the original FA guidance was based on game sites being on the red list. Has that changed or was it originally reported backwards?

Yes, it is where the game is played. Mo Salah did not play for Egypt at home vs. Angola, but joined them in Gabon for the away match. Egypt is on the red list and Gabon is not. Michail Antonio also did something similar for Jamaica.

Also, my understanding is that the PL (all 20 teams) came out and banned travel to red list countries. Those that did travel just defied the ban, but their clubs just didn't put up much of a fight against it.

Brazil is 7-0-0 in qualifying and are virtually already qualified. It's definitely ****housing.

It's more than typical Conmebol gamesmanship now. Brazil invoked a rule banning their unreleased players from club competition for 5 days.

Brazil isn't really trying to screw with Argentina, they are pissed at England, specifically the governing body of the EPL.

I for one welcome this rule. That means ManU cant trot Fred out there this weekend. Win win.

City loses Ederson with Steffan in covid quarantine, Fernandinho, Gabby Jesus.

Pool loses Alisson, Bobby Bright Teeth and Fabinho.

ManU gets to not play Fred. We win this so bigly.
