Here's a list of guys that weren't in the September squad that might be on this roster:

1. Hoppe
2. Chris Richardson
3. Julian Green
4. Zardes
5. Arriola
6. Weah
7. Joe Scally
8. Musah.

I'm excited to see who gets called up. 9 points LFG!!!

Think de la Torre is interested in a call up? Dude just posted highlights on his own Twitter. That's some BDE, right there.

Weah, Richards and Musah are locks in my opinion.

Zardes is a favorite and given UK's travel restriction this is a lock as well.

Arriola and Hoppe are very likely given Reyna's injury situation.

Hard to keep Scally out given his play in Bundesliga.

De La Torre made a bad call opting out of the Gold Cup IMO. That being said, I'm not opposed to giving him a camp invite. Id love to find midfield alternatives so that Berhalter can't call in Yueill solely on the basis of him "having USMNT experience."

Yueill wasn't in camp and was a last minute call in due to McKennie's indiscretion. Given the short notice, it would've had to have been MLS player that was at least somewhat familiar with Berhalter's tactics. If Williamson hadn't had his ACL injury, bet he would've been called in and not Yueill.

That said, Berhalter really needs to have a couple more MLS MF's (other than Yueill) in camp just to get familiar with the team and can be called in for emergencies.

I really like De La Torre. Think he could bring a lot to our midfield. There are times when we don't have a player like him that drives the ball forward.

Is this even in question or am I overthinking it? Will Pulisic even get the call up?
He hasn't returned to Chelsea from his Sept injury. If he can't play the first game due to injury/fitness and he can't play the second due to the UK "red list".. do you bring Puli at all?

Could go the other way too. If he is ready to go, it'd be a decent way to get back into playing shape coming off a long break. They could ask Berhalter to limit his minutes, and they already know he'll only play 2 games in the window instead of 3.

Don't think Moore's been playing much if at all. On the other hand, you have Dest, Yedlin and Scally all starting for their clubs and can play RB. At this point, I don't see how/why you'd bring in Moore as he won't be match fit.

Well obviously I don't know much since Moore is on the roster and Scally isn't. I guess it has to do with familiarity with the system and team. It's too bad as I think Scally really could provide depth for the USMNT.

I'm good with Moore as he played very well during the Gold Cup; just concerned about his lack of match fitness/sharpness.

59 minutes in 7 La Liga2 games.
He's behind Jeremy Mellot who seems to be firmly in place as their #1 option at RB.

I'm seeing Moore as emergency RB, behind Dest and Yedlin at this point. Still think Scally would be a better option (sharper and match fit) given his consistent starts for Bundesliga team. Also this introduces him to the team/system with an eye towards future windows for depth.

No Pulisic or Reyna, that stinks.
No Sargent, that is interesting.
Musah back and Richards in, that is awesome.
No Pefok, disappointing.
McKennie back, that is promising.

Talented roster, some interesting decisions. Hope for no injuries this weekend!

You guys, just for kicks, I projected what I thought our 2022 WC roster would be based on my current feel for the player pool, and projecting forward a year.

Striker: Pepi, Pefok (Hoppe is on roster, fills in if necessary)
Winger: Pulisic, Reyna, Weah, Aaronson, and Hoppe
Mids: McKennie, Musah, Adams, Lletget, Acosta
RB/LB: Dest, Yedlin, Antonee, Scally
CB: Brooks, Robinson, Richards, Zimmerman
GK: Steffen, Turner, Horvath

Obviously, guys will fall in and out of favor, and injuries will happen. Plus, I'm not Berhalter. So the above won't be exact, but I think it's a reasonable approximation of what our WC squad would look like. The point being, LOTS of very familiar names (some deserving) will be left out.

Notable exclusions:

Jordan Morris. Sargent, Konrad, Zardes, Arriola, Ream, Miazga, Cannon, Roldan, McKenzie, Giochini, Shaq, Vines, Bello, Sands, LDLT, Julian Green (WC vet), Dike, Busio. Sean Johnson. Yueill. A. Long.

You could put together a really solid Gold Cup roster with just those guys. Throw in longtime wildcards like CCV, Keaton Parks, Paxton Pomykal, Julian Aruajo, young prospects like Tessman, Caden Clark, Cade Cowell, J Gomez, R Ledezma, and you really get the feel our depth is the best it's ever been.

There's no room or excuse for any "cute" picks on the final 23. Looking at you Gregg.

Whats up with Zimmerman? Didnt play last window and not called up this one. And where does Aaron Long fit in assuming he ever recovers?
KCup17

That's a good question. I feel as though he missed the cut so that Richards could be included but that is my speculation.

I think the development of Mark McKenzie, Miles Robinson, and Chris Richards will end up making Ream and Zimmerman afterthoughts, although Ream has some value as a lefty if Greggg still feels like he might need a 3 CBs & wingbacks strategy vs some opponents or in some situations. Ultimately, Brooks is on the decline as those three continue to develop as well, because McKenzie, Robinson, and Richards are all so much faster than Brooks. I still think Miazga is a top 4-5 available CB - maybe top 2-3 right now, projected still top 4-5 by 2020 WC if McK & Rob continue developing, but I don't know why he's not getting calls. Unsure about Aaron Long. He was playing so well a year ago for USMNT and getting looks from across the pond before the injury. Now, I think he's injured again, right? Could he reestablish himself as a top 4 CB before Qatar?

I think unfortunately for Long, he will be at best just a squad player that gets called in when the 1st choice players are not available. Really a shame his club didn't let him go to Europe earlier in his career.

At this stage in his development, I don't rate McKenzie above Zimmerman or as a lock Top 4 CB.

Zimmerman gives me more size, which I like at CB, plus, he's the best or second best header threat in the pool from what I've seen (along with Miles Robinson), and this team needs all the set piece ability it can get. We don't regularly score goals from run of play. That trait puts Zimmerman on my roster, particularly since I don't think McKenzie is a better defender than Zimmerman.

In re to Ream, he's already too old (IMO), and he'll be a year older when the squad is named. He's never been particularly athletic, and that's getting worse with age. If you want a vet on the squad, it's Brooks/Yedlin.

I REALLY wouldn't feel comfortable w Ream defending a world class winger one on one in space, not would I feel comfortable w Ream defending a world class striker one on one in the box. So why is he on the team?

I think all those guys -notably McKenzie and Richards because Robinson has already proven it- have a year to prove they are fearless and can play balls in the air on set pieces, whether defensive clearance headers or attacking headers on frame, as well or better than Zimmerman. Brooks is currently the best CB we have available at playing balls in the air, but that skill alone isn't going to keep him in the Qatar squad if he keeps getting beat on counters with lack of pace. Same goes for Zimmerman.

Sadly, we could make the same argument for Dest and Yedlin. I dont really rate Yedlin, but at least he has recovery speed (for now).

This team kinda needs a Cherundolo or Bocanegra, a guy that locks down his defensive position for a decade or more. Doesn't even need to be world class, just dependable and consistent. I thought we had that with Brooks but a large portion of legacy was wasted by missing the last WC.

Correct. No Reyna should also go under the "stinks" category.
