Official news out of England is that Newcastle United has been sold by Mike Ashley. The Saudi-backed, Amanda Staveley led bid was approved earlier today. This move makes Newcastle United the richest club in England by a wide margin.

Howay the Lads!

As a Man City fan, I am disgusted by this. What a way to sell out.

Mino Raiola is probably the happiest person right now based on this news

In many Newcastle Supporter's opinion any owner is better than the former owner. The former did not have any ambition and the club stagnated under his ownership.

I think any real fan of any club that has struggled for years would be happy to see more $ injected into their team.

Oh absolutely. I'm hoping to see them start to compete for trophies once again. The days of Alan Shearer and title races with Man U feel like a lifetime ago. Hoping they can get back to former glory.

Meh this is just continuing to take the sport down the wrong road. I know its always about money, but how can you look at this and say, yeah sure its okay for an actual country to own and fund a soccer team.

I do like this quote, "The Premier League has now received legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not control Newcastle United Football Club."

Thats a load of bull***** It'll be like Cersei Lannister ripping up Ned Stark's paper.

I am glad for the club supporters that they are done with Ashley. However sovereign owned teams like City and PSG and now NU will eventually ruin the sport financially. Its not a level playing field. Its already not when you have cheap versus wealthy owners. When its a sovereign with an effectively unlimited pot of money its definitely not.

But in all seriousness, this sucks. I get that Newcastle fans will get to see their team spend more on players and compete at a higher level, but that's blood money. And sadly, we're going to see more and more teams become sportswashing fronts for violent and unscrupulous families and regimes.

Problem is, if a league shuns the money, they will take it elsewhere and make another league the top league in the world where all the talent goes. You can stand on "principles" and watch a second rate league.

Exactly why we're going to see this continue happening with greater frequency.

And that's why FIFA (lol speaking of corruption) needs to get involved and have mandates for ownership of teams that competes in FIFA approved leagues.

Most assuredly after the Qatar World Cup so as not to appear even more hypocritical than they already are.

How can you say that? They received a legally binding assurance.

It's not like a club would rather spend millions in legal fees rather than follow the rules.

So Gio Infantino can get even richer? Sure that will work. FIFA already demonstrated they love human rights violations. They have a world cup about to play in one great big human rights violations of a stadium complex.

The hilarious part today was they the PL claims the objection was over BeIN and TV rights and not anything to do with human rights.

It's okay guys, I'm sure the actual managers of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund don't personally join in the stoning of homosexuals in the street.

Interesting observation from this takeover I saw in the comments to an Athletic article: 80% owned by the Saudis, 10% by a woman, and 10% by two Jewish brothers. A very unlikely conglomerate.

You don't think a country with the wealth of Saudi Arabia is going to be able to avoid all that via subsidiaries aka the Public Investment Fund. There is zero doubt that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is in control.

The reason the sale did not go through in the first place had to do with piracy claims between BEIN sports and the PL inside Saudi Arabia. To the point where TV broadcasts of PL games were blacked out from Saudi Arabia.

There were a few people who were trying to raise hell about human rights issues and the owners being unfit to own a PL team. Yet it is blatantly obvious that money talks. So whatever human rights issues there may be are swept under the rug.

I apologize. My sarcasm isn't always clear.

I thought my last statement referencing the BS Man City pulled would be clearer.
