What key words/brands/websites do I need to look for to buy the best ball possible. The $20 adidas one I got looks like the equivalent of a plastic baseball.

"Best ball possible" is a really high bar and you can spend over $200 if that's what you really want.

Go here and browse what they offer. Seams or seamless is a pretty stark personal preference line - I like seams, but I know some hate them.

For example, is it just for training at home/solo?
Is it for use in team practice?
Is it intended for game use?

What level of play/skill/age is the ball intended for?

I generally used balls that were in the $40-$50 range, and game balls I think were usually over $100.
I also generally want off of feel, but that doesn't really help that much I guess. It just shouldn't 'feel plastic' if that makes sense.

I just bought a ball for my high school son from soccer.com for about $40. He still plays at the YMCA (but only for one more season). I was looking for one that was rated for higher level play than just youth recreation. So I got this one that's "FIFA Quality".

But I've had some pickup people not like it because it doesn't feel like a beach ball like some of the cheap Nike training balls.

My daughters preference is the Select as well.

Gotta have some weight to it!

Select and Brine make balls with a little more weight to them than some of the lighter, seamless training balls that you'll get from Nike or adidas or elsewhere.

My kids like the Select's and also the Nike Strike, Club and Flight.

3rd. Select Numero 10 is a great ball. Latex bladder, will have to fill with air a bit more; but a great ball in 40 dollar range.

4th-ed, and they've got some slightly more expensive balls if you want to upgrade a bit. Best price/quality/performance I've found.
