Excerpt on Twitter. I think we are going to hear more and more from players that they were all not united in what and how the USWNT org and players have operated over this glory period.

I wonder if she is speaking to that group of women that was the age bracket right behind her, the Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, O'hara group of players?

She always seemed like the sort of veteran leader of the team the last 4+ years, so it's interesting to hear her say that.

The defending of Rapinoe and crew is out in full force. Twitter mob, Nike and USSF will not allow any slander against their marketable players.

Per wikipedia, there are 41 USWNT players with 100 or more caps (next country is Germany with 27 and CHina at 23) Crystal Dunn already has 123 appearances

The USMNT has 17 players with >100 caps with guys like Tony Meola and Joe-Max Moore just making the cut

The US women are around each other all the time and practices are often harder the games. Whereas the men's national team play is a break from the club and is a chance to catch up and compete at a high level. The social + competitive dynamics between the two cannot be overstated

I really don't get...why I should care? Or why Hope Solo and Carli Lloyd think I should care? It effectively seems to boil down to them not liking their teammates. Which OK...fine, but like who cares? I mean are you looking for attention? Validation? Support? Because you had to make a choice to either play for the USWNT with a lot of people you don't like or not play at all? Pretty sure you aren't the first soccer players to have to make that choice.

I should mention that I'm quite biased here because I don't particularly rate either Carli or Hope. They are/were clearly extremely talented soccer players but...questionable characters from the extremely limited non-soccer related information that I've encountered.

Hope should have been in the soccer hall of fame the first time she was eligible. The only reason she wasn't because people didn't like her. She was that good.

Getting arrested a handful of times didn't help either.

I agree with that. But I still don't know why I should care that she doesn't like her teammates. Or that Carli doesn't. It feels very much like manufactured drama.

There are a lot of people who don't like Megan Rapinoe et al. And I have to assume that there are other soccer players who don't like some ot the players they play with (national team or otherwise).

Nor did marrying a man convicted of assault and who had strong suspicions of sexual assault.

I wouldnt be surprise if there are major cliques in that locker room. Its only natural given how much they are together. And lets not forget that the USWNT had a player refused to where a pride jersey who was later not called in for the WC (for "intolerance" not "religion" per reports) and other players publicly called her out and took shots. I'm sure there was some Mean Girls action going on

to add, but ya, I think there's some manufactured drama here (some real too) and these two have found their safe space to vent

"Culture" is such a broad generic term to throw around too. Did the players not get along? Were coaches assaulting people? Without any context or details it's largely meaningless. Right now it just sounds like two old timers with some axes to grind.

More of the same on another podcast today. I really don't get what she thinks she's doing.

What am I missing here? They seem to be alluding to what was pretty obvious. For good of bad, the USWNT has been very public and in the crosshairs of three major cultural and social battles. There were players who were very open about using that platform to move those battles forward. It seems they are referring to that. There were factions of players who wanted to use that platform and factions of players who either didn't welcome or didn't agree with that stance. Or just plain wanted to play soccer. They didn't get along.

I don't think this is any grand revelation.

My main question is: What does Lloyd think she's doing? Sure, it's great content, but does she think this is going to somehow make her look good? Or does she just not care any more and want to publicly burn some bridges?

I am guessing that she no longer feels like she has to stay quiet. Its airing dirty laundry IMHP. Ideally whats in the locker room should stay there. But former players in every sport do these "tell all" bios all the time. It sells.

It does point out that when players use sporting events or their team to promote a cause (and it can be any cause) there may be players that are uncomfortable with that cause and they feel like they have to be quiet and go along. It can certainly compromise a team structure.

Yeah, the more she talks about it, the more it's clear that there's some big personal beefs going on. It is funny that she keeps trying to paint it as a toxic cultural problem instead of personal relations issues.

Anyone listen to the podcast? I have not so looking for insight.

From articles I have read, it sounds like Lloyd's beef is with Rapinoe and the woke crowd pressuring and/or ostracizing those players who would not take up the cause du jour. And I get it. Are you a professional soccer player or are you an agitator for social change? I would push back on pressure from coworkers attempting to force me into going along with their agenda. I'm there to do a job, not make social statement.

Edit to add: I'm not a huge fan of Lloyd (not that it matters one way or the other). My then 13-year old soccer player had a brief interaction with her in Houston that left an indelible mark of disappointment with the way she interacted with him.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I tried listening to the podcast today, but I can't stand Hope's voice. If I feel like punishing myself, I'll listen to it.

The "winning" team of earlier years shielded alot of the toxic feelings which occurs with a large group. The "failure" of the olympic team brought some of the toxicity to the surface. They mentioned and some here brought up the lawsuit (i.e. Carli Lloyd speaks out about culture of U.S. Women's National Team: 'I hated it' (msn.com)), but that is not the only issue needing addressing.

Whether you agree or disagree with the lawsuit, you have to acknowledge the ruling has socialism written throughout.

This is true. She was on Tony Meola's show counterattack and it was extremely tough to listen to her voice.

The only 'ruling' was the USWNT getting poured out on summary judgment. They settled the case later.

Comparing USWNT and USMNT is a complete red herring in the first place. Most importantly because the men do not care what the women make so long as they are paid enough to risk their full time professional gigs for national team service.

They had Hope Solo's Podcast on the Soccer Channel on SiriusXM this afternoon. I could only listen to the two of the complain about the world for about 10 minutes and had to change the station.
