Man that sucks for Wales if they end up advancing in that spot. Their coefficient (20th as of Feb) puts them as a high Pot 3. They could even sneak into Pot 2 if some teams ahead of them fail to qualify.

Why does the draw have to occur on April 1st? Why not just push it to June or July? That will still give teams 4 months to prepare

Yes. But that's because Russia got kicked out of the qualifier. So Poland got the bye and played Scotland just to play. It's was basically a friendly.

Maybe the rationale is available windows left? If they wait till late June to draw, there's only one more international window until the WC.

Cannot believe Italy is missing back to back world cups. Just insane to even think about in say 2017 or 2016. Hell even 2021 when they won the Euros.

Agree. I dont understand what there is to gain by having it sooner. Does it take 4 months to plan out logistics/venues for each team?

It's not like Qatar is some vast country that logistics is going to be a big challenge like the '26 WC across 3 countries. You won't need 4 extra months to plan out the logistics for a country the size of Connecticut.

i listened to an interview after Italy won the Euros, and the guy was talking about Italy missing the last world cup. he said that while the 2018 WC was going on, you wouldn't even know it was happening in Italy. because they were not in it, restaurants really didn't show the matches. people didn't talk about it. i was just amazed because of how much Italy care about soccer.
