At least 120 dead, fans from rival teams clashed, police fired tear gas and people got trampled trying to get out.

What I read said it was all home team fans and they rioted because the team lost. Not sure that makes things better or worse. I guess worse cause I can see two groups clashing and one group instigating. Attacking your own side is really out of control.

Makes me nauseous just reading about it.

Just utterly inexcusable from this who instigated it and you just hope folks who didn't have much to do with it didn't get trampled to death

This story is tragic and reminded me of the riots and deaths at the soccer game in Mexico at Queretaro just maybe 6 months ago. I never saw anything besides the headlines late on the night that occurred in Mexico. Was there ever any conclusive story on what happened at Queretaro?

Not like Mexico because that was fans fighting each other/killing each other.

This was fans rioting and the deaths were from being tear gassed and fans rushing away causing a stampede.

According to Mexican Officials. If no one died, it is not because the attackers did not try

Surabaya is the most populous city in East Java at 2.9 million. Malang is second most populous in East Java at 0.8 million and the two are about an hour and a half apart so you might imagine Malang has a chip on their shoulder.

The issue likely was completely due to use of tear gas in a controlled exit environment. The police are not always as capable as we are used to, but tend to share a militaristic viewpoint since they have been a key control mechanism and aren't militarized but are very closely related since the Suharto days (which was in effect a junta but baptized with a democratic vote.)

Hope that helps.
