SV Spakenburg, a 3rd division amateur team, has made quite the run in the Dutch Cup. They've beaten FC Groningen and FC Utrecht (throttled Utrecht 4-1 at Utrecht in the process) and they'll now play PSV at home in the semis.

If they manage somehow to beat PSV, they'll likely qualify for the Europa League just by appearing in the Dutch Cup Final. The other semi is between Feyenoord and Ajax who are currently 1st and 3rd in the Eredivisie and likely to earn qualification through league play.

A Spakenburg player picked the balls for the semi-final draw.

That's so cool. That's the greatness of the great game.

Apparently, the rule in the Netherlands is that if the cup winner has secured Europa League qualification through league play, then the Europa League spot doesn't go to the cup runner up but rather the 3rd place Eredivisie team. Which is just a horrible rule and a horrible way to devalue your national cup.

Nonetheless, an incredible story but Spakenburg are further away from European glory than I thought.

Well I guess the only thing to do is to win the whole damn thing!

Alas, the dream is over for Spakenburg. They lost 2-1 tonight to PSV but not before scoring this banger.
