I have an extremely soccer obsessed soon to be 8 year old that I am considering taking to the match vs Mexico in Las Vegas. Is this a dumb idea?

Yes

Does he have a favorite player on a club where you could catch a club match instead? Mexico vs USA is a pretty heated rivalry and the scenes in the stands reflect that. Oh, who am I kidding? Mexican National team fans are probably the trashiest national team fan base I can think of.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

It's been a while since I've been to a US/Mexico game but, in my opinion, the experience is not that different from going to a heated NFL rivalry, as an example.

You'll probably see more stuff thrown onto the field at a US/Mexico game but the language and decorum in the stands is likely to be similar. But if you wouldn't take him to a big NFL rivalry game then I probably wouldn't take him to a US/Mexico game.

I went to the last Gold Cup match in Vegas with my 13 year olds when they opened Allegiant (to fans at least)

It was about 85 /15 Mexican fans....I really didn't have a problem. I expected worse...I think the price of tickets makes it to where it's not as bad as matches in Azteca

When we scored lots of drink throwing

Body painted females (you are in Vegas) were the only thing momma didn't approve of.

He'll hear things in the stands he may never have heard before, but I've attended about a half dozen US-Mexico games and never felt unsafe or even threatened by fans in the stands.

The journey from the seats to the car after the game might be the most dangerous part as all the idiots from both sides are pressed together and well lubricated. So may consider ducking out early or waiting until the crowds thin out.

I have seen Mexico play 4-5 times, a couple times against US, and I have never felt unsafe at all. It is a great experience. I would go and he will have a great time.

I would definitely go. But I agree here, I wouldn't leave early but I would stick around in the stadium as long as you can to just let the crowds get a little more dispersed back under the interstate and over to the casinos. Maybe y'all would get to watch some warm downs and then head out

We decided to go and it was an absolute blast. I bought club seats and toward the very back of the section for an easy exit if SHTF. It was also under the overhang to prevent drinks from raining down on us.

We had absolutely zero issues with the Mexican fans around us. I was actually concerned because a handful directly in front of us showed up real drunk. The first time drinks started flying one of those same guys gave the people he saw doing it an ear full. They did take part in the chant that ended the game though.

Things did get dicey in the second half and there were several fights in the section over from us but luckily he didn't see any of it because he wasn't tall enough. The fights appeared to be amongst Mexican fans. I didn't see any Americans involved.

We took the advice from above and stayed for a bit after the game. During that time I bet 100+ Mexican fans came up to my son and fist bumped or shook his hand. A few groups started a "USA, USA, USA" chant

I was there, we were definitely in the minority in our section but got along well with all of the Mexican fans around us. It was a great time.

Navel gazing question in light of the above, and in light of the kid on TV who had a US kit and a Mexico headband… how many years of US dominance would need to happen for the Mexican-Americans who support Tri as their #1 team to switch sides and root for USMNT whenever the two meet?

That is already happening. A large amount of American Mexico fans root for both, just like people in New Jersey also root for and watch, like Italy or whatever.

Kicking the crap out of them 3-0 repeatedly will greatly accelerate that, but even just at the status quo, one day in the future, all the beer chuckers and goalkeeper chanters are going to look around and realize that suddenly they are outnumbered even though all the same people are at the game.

When I was coaching in Houston, most of my players were born in the US to parents who'd immigrated from Latin America. They mostly rooted for their parent's country of origin (a lot of Mexico but also Honduras, El Salvador, some Costa Rica and Panama too) but also followed and liked the US team. Because of that split loyalty, they were easily influenced by results. Whichever team was more fun to watch and won matches was the team they talked about and supported. It also helps to have cultural representation on the US team. Guys like Pepi and Jesus F. and their stories are recognized and respected by the young fans.
