Got asked to move from AR1 to center for a pretty big HS varsity match tonight between two schools that are pretty good and regularly in the quarterfinals for the State championship.

One of them has won 17 5A state titles in the last 30 seasons! The other just became a school in 2015 and has won 2.

Really should not be nervous about this but I am. Became a mentor/instructor last spring for USSF, and done plenty of high level games in my life. Don't know a soul at either of these matches (my kids are long out of school and so are their friends' younger siblings).

Good luck! Throw out a yellow or two early and let them know you aren't going to take any crap tonight!

What state are you in, clearly not Texas if you have HS Soccer in the fall.

Have fun!

I am always a little nervous before I'm the center for a match, but I end up having a good time (mostly) and like being able to talk with the players. Better to be a center than work a dual anyway.

Send an assistant to the bus early on to mark your territory.

yeah, probably will do that.

In Kansas. The guy who was supposed to center has 2 HS games tomorrow and asked if I could do it for him to cut down on his work load. He's also bringing com's which always helps.

Assignor told the other guy to do the game! Going to call him and ask why?

A friend, who is a high level regional referee was at the game, and said he saw no reason for him to replace me (he's also a mentor/evaluator).

Center was pissed he had to do the game and it showed. He was just angry and snippy with everyone the entire game. My friend said "assignor should (ave let you do this)

Center handed out about 8 yellows (2 coaches) and a yellow/red at the end of the game after a golden goal on OT. For sure 4 of the yellows were deserved…others not so sure.

As I was leaving, some old codger said to me "that was pathetic " so I handed him an index card with a QR code and said "scan that and you can sign up to be a HS referee"… he told me to shove it and I just walked away laughing!,,

I'm stealing that QR code idea.

Well, this is interesting, the assignor told me he didn't tell him that! Said he talked to him and only told him if he felt conditions were unsafe to call off the game because of heat. Someone told me the game was the only HS game in Kansas Friday night (would have been everyone's first game).*

Now why would he flip like that and not just tell me. Especially since he stated out loud how pissed off he was at the situation of him being told to center the game and then being just a complete a hole to everyone.

I didn't realize I'd worked with him once before last spring. He and I were ARs for a game and we used his flags. After the game, he would not take the flag back from me until I "rolled it up correctly"!

* Last weekend a club held a tournament and rather than cancel ahead of time, decided go ahead and play anyway with forecasted temps over 100 Saturday and Sunday. Friday evening was OK, but after noon Saturday it was just unsafe, especially on turf. I head a referee threw up. They ended up canceling the finals Sunday and just crowned winners from pool play. Some teams actually forfeit games Saturday bc coaches said " we're not doing this". Story made the KC star and local broadcast news…kind of a black eye for a historically good organization.

There were 2 big club tourneys that I know of in Houston and CS this past weekend. One of our games in CS was on Sunday at 2 and temps were ~106+. Definitely dangerous…we didn't see or hear of any heat related issues but there had to be some.

I am not saying all HS soccer referees are weird (heck I was one) but I will say that it seems to draw in some weird people.

My daughter's game last Sunday was played in 106 degree heat. Two water breaks per half. Not ideal but everyone was okay except for the ass kicking they took.

My daughters ECNL RL games went to 2 water breaks and unlimited subs.

It wasn't hit on Sunday morning tho.

All you have to do is sign up, pay the fee, attend the rules meeting (which can be done virtual now) pass the test (which you get a copy of before hand) and voila, you're a referee.

Knowing nothing about how to be a referee. Its great!

Actually there is a push here that you must be US Soccer certified first. Its not a requirement yet but there is a push to require it.

Local US Soccer Instructors tried to work with KS HS Athletics to get this implemented and got nowhere.

I know some good USSF ref's that won't do HS b/c of some of the BS. Everyone in the world plays FIFA rules with modifications. HS has there very own rule book. Hell, half the questions on the test are about socks and uniforms.

That seems to be the biggest concern for many. It's absurd.
