I don't think they had many options.
Pep would never coach Real Madrid bc of his deep, deep ties to Barcelona.
Klopp pretty much came out and said he doesn't want the job. He's probably waiting for the Germany job.
Ancelotti got tired of all the drama and jumped ship.
Zidane is waiting for the France job.
Their promotion from within, Arbeloa, has not worked out.
A younger, up-and-coming manager would not have the aura or authority to handle the HUGE egos currently at Madrid. If Xabi Alonso, one of the most accomplished midfielders of the last 25 years and an exciting, successful manager in his own right, what hope does anyone else have?
IMHO, it almost had to me Mourinho bc those that are qualified don't want the job and of those that would want the job, probably wouldn't be able to handle it.
And I am here for the inevitable implosion that Mourinho will leave in his wake.

If I am Perez or whoever ends up calling the shots at RM, I get rid of Vini Jr, Tchouamni, and Rudiger (I'd also want to get rid of Mbappe but he would be very, very difficult to move) and reset the culture in the dressing room. You have to start there. Infighting just cannot happen, get rid of the toxicity. Put Mbappe in his place (that sh*t he pulled to undermine Alonso in forming a 'guard of honor' for Barcelona does not happen again) and bring in some moldable studs. Since I can't move Mbappe and my team has to be built around him, bringing in Didier Deschamps as manager might be my best bet as he seems to get the best out of him. I bring in an Osimhen or a Harry Kane since Haaland is probably out of reach to lead the front line and move Mbappe to his best position, LW. Bring in a Caicedo, Wharton, or Baleba (or whoever their data analytics suggests) to anchor the midfield and allow Valverde and Bellingham to boss the rest of the midfield. Bring in some CBs to solidify the defense which will then, hopefully, allow TAA to be unleashed and do what he does best.
