I heard about this yesterday but didn't realize it was Joey Crawford that called a foul on Camby and had Nash shoot free throws even though they were 10 feet away from each other.

I can only imagine the meltdown if this had happened to the Spurs.

Yeah, because Spurs fans have been the ones complaining about the refs in this series.

Wow.

That's the worst I've ever seen. A) Wasn't a foul B) If it WAS a foul, the foul is on Grant Hill for a moving screen (I'm reaching) C) Nash is nowhere near the foul D) Nash is nowhere near Crawford.

Joey Crawford has no business as an NBA referee. Period. I would trust John Gotti, Jr to call a fair game before I would trust Joey Crawford.

Seriously, I don't know how the players can contain themselves from "accidentally" running into Joey Crawford and sending him to the ground.

The guy is a serious ******.

I can't believe they ever let him ref again after the Duncan incident.

This should tell you something:
When I shoot NBA games, it is normal to get nice isolated shots of the star players, coaches, players in trade talks and next year's free agents.
I was also instructed to get shots of Joey Crawford, too.

Soup,

If Joey C gets game 6, do you think that is a random assignment?

Both Crawfords are off tonight, so could be either one tomorrow night. If it's Joey, Spurs fans are ****3d. If it's Danny C, Mavs fans will have a fit.

It really is unbelievable that that clown is still employed.

It was an awful call, but Crawford throwing out Duncan was one of the funniest things in the history of sport, from Duncan's reaction to what Crawford said to him to the Mavs players having the "WTF look on their faces
Ulrich

I'll agree with that. If SNL made a skit about a terrible basketball official, they would have a hard time topping Crawford/Duncan for humor or insanity.

Maybe, but Joey Crawford has done several Spurs games since then, including playoffs, and has done an okay job. The only question mark was the no-call on Brent Barry in game 4 of the '08 Laker series when he was clearly fouled, and it isn't like the Spurs were going to win that series anyhow.
Ulrich

Hypothetical situation: Lets say Joey Crawford duckwalks out to center court with his pants around his ankles, then from that dignified position calls a double flagrant-2 on two starters from the same team during a dead ball.

Would that get him fired?

He was convicted of felony fraud in federal court and still has a job.

I can't believe Joey hasn't tossed this entire thread yet from texags

Seriously though, of all the things that really bother me about the NBA, the fact that Joey Crawford has a job as an official still is the number 1 most infuriating thing by a mile.

Really, we need a world class simplebay level dbag as an NBA ref. Really?

wait, so was the called brushed under the rug? is the nba not going to say anything about it? not that i'm surprised but that was as blatant as it gets.

Officials in the NBA have no accountability. The fact that he still has a job is proof.

The front office will give you some BS about how they review them, but how many times do you hear about an official getting fined or suspended for ****ty calls?

The NBA is one of the only jobs I can think of that will fine you for criticizing your co-worker. Unless, of course, they consider the officials to be superior to the players.

They actually do get suspended, but I don't think fined. The biggest thing for them is games in the playoffs. They get paid more for the later games in the playoffs, and the ****ter the ref you are (Joey Crawford not included) the less games you will call. The guys that call deep into the playoffs get a ton of cash for it,

I'll step on some thin ice and sorta defend Crawford. It should be clear that I think he's a terrible ref in general.

It looks like Camby might have fouled Grant Hill. Crawford just brainfarted and assigned the free throws in Nash by accident. It's still a big mistake, but it's not made up from wholecloth.

I am pretty sure that they were all assigned before they knew the Spurs were going to be up 3-1, then up 3-2. I do not believe the NBA assigns particular refs based on who is winning or losing games.

And if you were to look at this game before the series, you probably would have guessed the Mavs would be up 3-2 and the Spurs would need a home win, so assigning a ref that would be likely to throw out the whole Spurs team and make Pop coach the Austin Toros wouldn't have been in the best interest of the NBA - who would want each and every series to go 7 games with a Knicks-Lakers NBA FInals b/c you can't have a Lakers-Lakers Finals.
Ulrich

If Joey Crawford can't tell Grant Hill and Steve Nash apart, that's also evidence that he's not competent.

Apparently the guy has superhuman hearing and can't see.

A) The foul you are talking about wasn't a playoff foul
B) It could have just as easily gone against Hill for a moving screen
C) Of all the officials, Crawford was furthest away from Nash. Just as bad as Crawford's call was the fact that tweedle's Dee and Dumb never caught it either

If the same thing had happened in the NFL, the zebra's would have had a conference and made it right. Instead, it happened in the NBA, where on occasional instances you can have 3 ****ty refs calling the same game.

I'd be interested to know how they do assignments. ie. Before the series or is it daily. If it is before a series, why aren't they released with the schedule? Would your contacts know that?

Also, quick question for anyone: Is Pop a military man? I noticed during the Star Spangled Banner it looked like he was standing at attention.

The refs are announced publicly the day of game or day before. It's short notice.

When the Donaghy mess hit the news, that was part of the discussion. Donaghy was letting his gambler friends know the ref assignments before the public. Then they could bet heavily before the betting line moved. Stern said it was announced late so that refs couldn't be influenced, but that rang pretty hollow.

But the NBA doesn't have a list before a series, ie these are the refs for possible 7 games between SA/DAL. They assign the refs basically on a game-by-game basis. That feeds the conspiracy theorists (like me). The NBA said it was too convoluted to make assignments earlier.
dreyOO

game-by-game basis = as needed
