This can be like the 2005 offseason

The 2005 team was transformed by dumping their long term center (Bradley) that was the epitome of the weakness of the previous 5 years, and they also dumped a long time veteran leader (Finley) that had slowly declined and was getting in the way of younger players.

Sound familiar?

Dampier is gone, and with his contract they can probably attach Jet to a trade package and get a serviceable player at the least. And they will be major players with all the free agents without including the Jet contract.

Plus I think Terry has a similar non-guaranteed contract like Dampier that will be valuable next off-season (will have to get Dan 07s Dad on db.com to confirm)

Roddy B steps right in to Jet's role, and Haywood replaces Damp.

Still have many holes, but as always the Mavs are in position to reload on the fly around Dirk

And if Dirk wants to opt out and try to sign with Wade or Lebron in New York or Miami, more power to him.

Or he can stay, and Dallas can hopefully bring in someone like Bosh or Joe Johnson

Wouldnt help our defense, but we'd be a lot better off than we are now

1. we need a new coach. we win this game and series if we have a better coach.

2. i do feel bad for dirk. yes this wasnt his best game, but he showed up in game 2 and 3 but his teammates didnt. he should leave and ill follow the new team he plays for.

3. jet/jkidd/marion/damp need to go.

If Dirk opts out and Dallas cuts Dampier, they still don't have cap space.

No one can pay Dirk 22 mil in the first year, can they?

If not, there's no way in hell he leaves.

I forget the specifics, but I read an in depth breakdown of our situation a while back.

Basically, if Cuban is willing to accept the luxury tax, we can manioulate ourselves into position to give one player a max deal

It would kill me, but I wouldn't blame him at this point.

My god. You still don't understand the salary cap, do you?

Even if Dirk walks and Damp gets cut, the Mavs won't have enough space to sign anyone more than the MLE would give them.

However, the Mavs can work out a S&T, and Dampier's contract is not guaranteed and almost adds up to a max contract by itself (13mm.)

Unless he cuts Damp and Dirk walks, Cuban is probably paying the Lux Tax anyway.

Like I said, I dont remember much about how it worked out

Obviously if Dirk opts out the Mavs will blow it up and rebuild from scratch, which would be fun.

Dirk would probably have to take a huge paycut to opt out and follow Lebron or Wade, but I think he would do it if he feels the Mavs can't get it done.

GS, as long as Cubes is the owner Dallas will be over the cap. (at least until Dirk retires)

This is what would happen. A team that has no chance of being anything next year (Heat) with a max-contract superstar (Wade) can go the rebuild route by S&T Wade for Damp. Damp's contract is not guaranteed through 2011, so he'll get cut instantly, saving them $13 million. Dallas can include another player (Terry), depending on what Wade signs his new contract for, to make the numbers work. I want to say Terry's contract is like $7-8mm? If the reports are correct saying Dirk is fine with restructuring to take a pay cut for 10-11, then this is definitely a plausible scenario.

It almost feels blasphemous to talk about Wade in a Mavs uni though. Bosh seems like a much more plausible choice, since he's a Dallas native and he can play C or PF.

Dallas' best bet is to use the ending K to get someone from a team that is ready to unload to save money.

I think Bron and Wade are staying. Neither really have ties to Dallas, and Dallas isn't a sexy destination. Don't know about JJ. Bosh is a wild card.

But if you are Bosh, here are your options:
1. Force trade to Cleveland to play with Bron
2. Force trade to Miami to play with Wade.
3. Go play for DAntoni, get lots of endorsement money and put up ridiculous numbers
4. Go home and be second fiddle to Dirk, and play out Kidd/Marion/Terry's last years. RoddyB and/or Butler probably leave in S&T.
5. Go to Chicago and have a starting lineup of Rose/Heinrich/Deng/Bosh/Noah.

Best bet is to find a team that wants to unload and trade with them.

Josh Smith and Marvin Williams for Dampier, Roddy and a first.

Something with GSW? Lots of talent and lots of salary.

Okefor and Posey for Dampier and Najera?

Philly, Atlanta, Golden State, and New Orleans are probably the most likely teams to allowed their talent to get raped with Dampier. They aren't going anywhere. If Atl loses JJ, I can see them selling off for picks/talent. Philly and NO have no direction and no room for movement.
