What are your thoughts?

I know it's a long shot to sign one of the big free agents this summer but if I'm Cuban I sure try. It looks like Dirk just doesn't have it in him to carry a team to a championship. He is a great, great player but you have to figure his production is going to start falling off in the near future. If they can't get James, Wade or another superstar type player they may have to blow this thing up for a year and try to grab somebody in the upcoming draft. If they don't sign one of the free agents I'd like to see them get rid of anybody they can make money off/receive draft choices for, except for Dirk and Roddy. Keep those 2, take your chances in the lottery the next year and hope you can luck out and get a game changer in the draft. Immediately rebuild around the new superstar, Dirk and your fiery young PG.

Who knows, maybe Dirk and others will rework their contract enough to pull James into Dallas. A guy can dream can't he?

If LeBron/Wade wants to come here then Cuban can make it happen without any adjustments. The only thing that needs to happen is have LeBron /Wade make it known that they want a trade to Dallas - Cuban offers 8 games a year in Cowboys Stadium, a top 4 market, a solid veteran team needing an alpha dog and an owner willing to spend anything.

No other contender can offer the Cavs/Heat what Cuban has in a Sign and Trade.

After those 2 there are so many possibilities. The Mavs will be one of the major players because of their trade assets plus willingness to deal.

Young talent - Roddy B
Instant expiring contract up to ~16.5mil s&t value - Dampier
2011 expiring contract/borderline all-star up to ~13.4mil s&t - Butler

Also - Didn't Dirk say he'd take a pay cut this year?

He's due like $21mm.

Dallas' best bet is to use the ending K to get someone from a team that is ready to unload to save money.

I think Bron and Wade are staying. Neither really have ties to Dallas, and Dallas isn't a sexy destination. Don't know about JJ. Bosh is a wild card.

But if you are Bosh, here are your options:
1. Force trade to Cleveland to play with Bron
2. Force trade to Miami to play with Wade.
3. Go play for DAntoni, get lots of endorsement money and put up ridiculous numbers
4. Go home and be second fiddle to Dirk, and play out Kidd/Marion/Terry's last years. RoddyB and/or Butler probably leave in S&T.
5. Go to Chicago and have a starting lineup of Rose/Heinrich/Deng/Bosh/Noah.

Best bet is to find a team that wants to unload and trade with them.
Butler
Terry
Dampier
Najera
Carroll

Dalembert
Iggy
Brand
Thad Young
Lou Williams

Josh Smith and Marvin Williams for Dampier, Roddy and a first.

Something with GSW? Lots of talent and lots of salary.

Okefor and Posey for Dampier and Najera?

Philly, Atlanta, Golden State, and New Orleans are probably the most likely teams to allowed their talent to get raped with Dampier. They aren't going anywhere. If Atl loses JJ, I can see them selling off for picks/talent. Philly and NO have no direction and no room for movement.

I think we need to keep Roddy - kid looks like a special talent.

Depends what you get for him. EVERYONE will ask you for him in any salary dump trade.

Trade Butler and Damp with his expiring contract for someone who can score in the paint.

Here's my best speculation:

Lebron is staying. His team is loaded I don't know why he'd leave, unless he's in cohorts with Wade to both play in NYC or some bull****.

Wade is leaving, Bosh is leaving.

The Heat are more likely to blow it up if Wade leaves, which means they'd be a better option for a S&T Wade for Damp + player x + whatever else the Mavs want to get raped for.

Bosh seems like a better fit to return to Dallas since he's from here. But the way Toronto went after Turkeyglue in FA last year seems to suggest they think they're on the right track, which means they don't want a cap-dump contract (unless a 3rd team gets involved).

If Dirk stays true on his paycut talk, you could sign Wade or Bosh without losing anyone else on the roster. I can see us losing Barea (his contract is up), Terry, Rodrigue (as GS mentioned people are going to want him in a blowup deal), or Haywood (his contract is up) - those are the big names, any of the other spares can go as well, although NOBODY on the planet is going to want Najera or Carroll's contracts unless we're giving up something else in return (I'll give you Roddy if you take Carroll's ****ty contract kind of thing).

Also Iggy is one of my favorite players so it would be fun to see him as a Mav, but not for that deal.

Don't Bosh and Dirk play the same position?

Bosh is a true PF but he can play C, same as Dirk. If we are able to re-sign Haywood I could see a 3 man shuffle at those positions, very similar to what we did in 07 I think?

Dirk doesn't have to take a paycut as long as Cuban doesn't care about lux tax.

It is a S&T. What Dirk does is completely irrelevant.

Carroll is 11mm over 3 years and Najera is 5mm over 2 years. Not great, but not horrible.

Barea (his contract is up),

Team Option, I believe.

I think it is a good deal for the Mavs:
Brand: Got 13/6 in 32mpg this year. Have him come off the bench, and you have a legit post scorer. You want 20-25mpg out of him, and he would be a solid, yet very, very overpaid role player. But since when does overpaid matter?

Dalembert. Will Frustrate you the same way Damp did, but is way better than Damp. I think Mav fans would be thrilled to get his 8/10/2.

Thaddeus has a lot of talent. Let Marion come off the bench to play PF and start Thaddeus at SF. That's an upgrade. Plus he is 21.

Iggy is better than Terry or Butler. He is just 26.

Lou - Good scoring PG. You now have a great rotation of Kidd/Lou/RoddyB at PG and can start phasing Kidd out and looking at a future of RoddyB/Lou.

Dalembert/Haywood
Dirk/Brand
ThaddeusYoung/Marion
Iggy/Roddy
Kidd/Lou

That is a hell of a lot better than what just lost in the first round. And instead of getting older with Butler/Dirk/Kidd/Marion, you are looking at a bigger window with 20-somethings Iggy/Thaddy/Haywood/Roddy/Lou to go with vets like Dirk/Kidd/Marion/Brand. And Philly saves at least 20mm this year and more next year.
