Spurs have any money or options available to bring in a big name guy in the off season?

It's going to be difficult. They are over the salary cap this year. I'm not sure any team would want Jefferson's contract.

We have the MLE. We also have a decent draft pick. There's a good chance at landing splitter. We won't re-sign Bonner or Mason. We will probably look at trade options concerning Jefferson, maybe Parker (I kind of doubt this one). That's pretty much what we are looking at right now.

I think the Spurs would do more harm than good by blowing up their team at this point (read: trading Parker and Jefferson). And basically, that's what they'd have to do to get a "big name" FA and fill out the rest of their team.

They might as well keep what they have together and try to get Splitter and some decent vets to attempt a run over the next year or two.

I would doubt any big names would want to come to SA anyway.

Trading Jefferson is in no way a part of "blowing up" the team. Honestly, how often do you notice him when he is out there on the court?

I've started to realize that Parker needs to stick around. He isn't very good on defense, but he is getting better as he overcomes the injury... and I had forgotten how clutch he is. The Spurs would need to get a lot back to think about involving him in a trade.

I meant they would have to trade BOTH Parker and Jefferson to have a shot at a bigtime FA and sign some decent role players.

I did not mean that losing Jefferson would blow up the team. But if they dump Jefferson and keep Parker, they still dont have enough cap space to go get anyone without having a bunch of holes on the bench.

That makes sense.

Honestly though, picking up Splitter addresses almost all their needs. The only thing left is to get something out of the SF position, and I'd be willing to give Jefferson another year at that spot. I think he can give the Spurs more than he is.

I will be very disappointed if they trade Parker. I'm freakin' loving this Ginobili/Parker/Hill backcourt. I feel confident no matter who's handling the ball.

Spurs focus this summer will be Splitter and a good draft pick.

Splitter is self-explanatory. You get a big you can put next to Tim, who can guard other bigs, and limit Tim's minutes to an extent.

Spurs have the #20 pick in the draft. There's lots of good small forwards / big two guards coming out this year. Spurs should be able to grab one of them with that spot, unless someone unexpectedly falls.

Put those together with helping Mason and Bonner pack their bags, and that'll be the bulk of the summer. Only other thing to watch will be what they do with Ian Mahinmi.

Though I doubt this scenario occurs the Spurs could do something big with the Jefferson contract, especially if they combined him with someone like George Hill. They would have enough cash there to do a S&T for any of the big name FA's.

Although I'm fairly certain Mason is gone, $5 says somehow, some way, Bonner finds a way to stick around

I would actually rather trade Tony Parker than George Hill at this point - but it all depends on what you are getting.

While Tony Parker is still very young at 28, he has a lot of miles on the odometer for a 28-year old. Players - especially the guys that rely on their speed, quickness and agility - tend to start falling off at 1000 games. Tony Parker has played 796 games in the NBA, not including his team France playing time. The Last three years he has had minor, but nagging injuries.

If we could get a big name, I'd be happy to send Parker away. But all that is contingent on a big name FA wanting to sign with SA. I'm not sure Bron, Wade or JJ want to carry on Robinson and Duncan's torch. I don't think there is any chance. Plus it is freakin San Antonio - not Miami, Chicago, New York. San Antonio.

From a "I just want to win" standpoint:
Dice/Blair
Duncan/Splitter
Bogans/#20 draft pick
Wade/Ginobili
Hill

Would have to be a lot more enticing than Beasley and Chalmers, assuming Bron stays put.

Would there be a better starting 5 in all of basketball than:
McDyess
Duncan
LeBron
Ginobili
Hill

But it is about a lot more than winning. And Fiesta Texas season passes aren't all that enticing. That is a hell of a lot better team with a hell of a lot more experience than anyone else making an offer. And at least Cleveland or Miami would have a legit all-star to rebuild around at a very tough position to fill.

The thing that you have to take into account when trading for a big name is that a team is not going to want TWO expiring contracts (Parker & Jefferson). A team isn't going to want to get a couple of players with the risk of losing both the next year if they trade away a big name. The only way we could pull off a deal for a good player is to let go of Hill, and we sure as hell better not do that.

The Spurs are better off looking to trade an expiring for a good role player (a three point shooting defender).

He is a free agent. So yes. But Real Madrid may give him a stupid offer and with the impending lockout, he may not want to chance it in SA.
