Don't know if Chicago would plunk down that kinda cash for a guy that hasn't proven it in the NBA. Would be funny as hell... and fascinating to see the domino impact it would set off in the college coaching ranks.

Avery Johnson to the Bulls. Nowitzki opts out of his contract and signs with the Bulls to reunite with his former coach.

No way; he is making so much money as it is and would get his butt handed to him in the NBA.

I just put this on my list of things I really want to happen. Just below Spurs winning a championship, and just above one of the muppets doing a sex tape with a midget.

Calipari is extremely tight with Lebron, Worldwide Wes, and several of the big fish NBA free agents this season. When Cal did it the first time, he didn't have any NBA connections. If the Bulls are looking to be big players in the NBA free agency market this season, the $4-5 million per year would be peanuts.

My first reaction was NO WAY

But after thinking about it, I think it could work. The Bulls No. 1 need right now is a recruiter. If there's one thing Coach Cal can do, it's recruit. Obviously recruiting NBA players is different than recruiting high schoolers, but I'm still intrigued.

I'm interested to hear how you "recruit" NBA players with anything other than more money than the other guy. My guess is that his skills as a recruiter would be nothing short of worthless in the NBA.

Sure, this offseason looks like one where free agents will be "shopping around" for new teams, but that perspective is nothing short of naive. I'll bet a six-pack right now that guys are going to go where their agents think they will get more cash, and more exposure for potential cash (read advertising). This idea that NBA players just decide they like the looks of a team, or the coaches pitch, or whether a team can win a championship with the current players, is a farce.

Just my $0.02.

You recruit a player by selling him a vision and convincing him that Team X is the best place for him to play.

When it comes to this summer's marquee free agents, there's no such thing as "more money than the other guy." Unless they work out sign and trades with their current teams, they will have the same max-dollar offers from every team with the cap space.

If the sole basis for the decision is contract dollars and advertising dollars, then Lebron and D-Wade will both sign with the Knicks this summer. End of story. That could happen, but I don't think it will.

I believe there will be alot of factors that will go into these decisions. How close are they to winning a championship? How much does the city care about basketball? Does the player want to play closer to home? Having a coach that can sell those factors and has a good, pre-established relationship with the players on the market to can only help, IMO.

I think theres two questions at play here:

Does signing Coach Cal increase the Bulls chances of luring Wade, Bosh or Lebron?

-MassAggie and Simplebay say no and I think that is a perfectly defendable position. I think it could help, but obviously not to the extent to where signing 1 or 2 of those guys is guaranteed... haha

If you think Coach Cal increases those chances, how much does he increase them and correspondingly, does garnering that extra 10% chance balance out the fact that you'd be leaving better coaches on the market to bring him in (JVG, Avery, etc.)?

-Who knows. All I know is I'm a Bulls fan and I'm tired of seeing them put out a mediocre product. I want them to make a big splash this summer in free agency and I want them to have all their chips lined up to make sure they do so.

Think about Danny Ainge getting Garnett and Allen to the Celts. He had to sell the idea that they would be a championship contender. You can’t tell me that Boston offered the biggest contract to Garnett, he was just sick of playing his heart out for a lowly Minnesota team and wanted a shot at a ring, and knew that Boston could offer that.

Ainge didn't recruit Garnett- he was handed to him by Mchale for a bag of peanuts

At Calipari's press conference, he announced that he signed LeBron to a post-dated contract for this summer.

Cal is the Pete Carrol of college basketball. Everybody knows he is dirty but he is smart enough to keep everything below the radar. If you ever see Cal jump to the NBA you can bet your ass that some major sanctions are coming down the pipe at UK soon thereafter.
