The NBA is about matchups. LA is a terrible matchup for Phoenix. Hell LA is a bad matchup for anybody, but particularly Phoenix.

My guess is that, had SA been the opponent instead, the result would have been the same but it wouldn't have been so ugly. Phoenix just has nothing for LA's size, and it is even worse when they try to go small ball.

LA has the best interior defense in the league, and is the best at exploiting their size. Those things are usually lethal for a team like Phoenix. That's what SA used to do to them regularly, and that's what LA is doing now.

Again, switch LeBron with Kobe and you have the exact same result both ways.

Agree that it's matchups. SA would have matched up better against LA than PHX does (same result though). Dallas would have matched up better against PHX than SA did (hard not to though) and Jason Kidd might have averaged a triple double in the series and been hailed a hero.
