Yao wants 6 year deal, Rockets offering 4 years. I like having Yao but 6 years is crazy and I am not even sure 4 years is worth the risk for the money he would command.

Where do the Rockets go from here? Is it time to move out of the Ming Dynasty and on to a new era of Rocket Ball?

Yes. I don't think he will ever complete a season.

I'm fine with getting rid of Yao, but we need to get something in return. We can't just let him walk. This is all assuming Yao comes back and is successful.

They really need to stagger his contract based on games played if at all possible. There are too many people in many sports getting paid a king's ransom for doing little to nothing.

If he doesn't want 4 years at max money, he can test the open market to see what he can get.

1. Nobody will give him 6 years of max money
2. Nobody can pay him as highly as the Rockets without managing a sign and trade

Personally I think 4 years is overly gratuitous. 6 years is laughable.

They should sign him to a contract that pays him $8,000 per minute during the regular season. Play 32 mpg for 78 games per year and you make $20mm.

if the only option is a 6 yr deal, I think the rockets would be better just letting him walk

something like 3 years for ~$15mil per sounds about right

Agreed, certainly don't think he is a max dollar player and 6 years is insane considering the failure to complete an entire season the last what 3 years.

Wouldn't mind an incentive laden contract for 4 years. Otherwise, make a deal with Portland or another of the West Coast teams. Maybe the Clippers could work a deal and we get Deandre, Griffen plus picks or something in that ballpark. Wouldn't mind a deal with the Lakers for Bynum.

Not sure Yao deserves 6 years for his on court performance or lack there of due to injuries. But he should get whatever he wants for the amount of exposure and money he brings into the NBA and to the Rockets. He alone made Tracy McGrady an all star starter for several years.

I wouldn't really want to give him 4.
