Seriously, what could he even possibly be thinking? I don't see any scenario at all where this is a positive for him.

he said he hated playing for pop and would gladly take less money to be happy elsewhere

that's what a reporter tweeted
Enzo The Baker

If he really said that, he is softer than I thought.

So because you care more about happiness than money you are soft?

I for one would gladly take less money if it meant I were happy. He's still going to be a millionaire regardless.

I just read he told Chris Mannix that he loved Pop and thought Timmy was the smartest player he ever played with. He feels he just didn't fit in.

I said he was soft because Pop was always riding and figured he didn't have the thick skin to take the criticism. But that wasn't the case.

They still only have the MLE.

Damn. I didn't realize we were still over the cap. Maybe this will open the Parker trade rumors back up.

Ronnie Brewer?

Even though he stunk it up for most of this year (only judging him by his previous standards), I really think they lose a lot from a depth standpoint without him. Now they have no one at SF. At least he was decent in his disappointing season.

Now the Spurs have another hole to fill with no $ to go get anyone.

In other words, I think this puts an end to their title hopes, unless James Anderson is a freakin stud.

I take back my first post. This is awful news. Assuming we keep Parker, we have to decide whether to sign Splitter along with a player for the VM or let Splitter go and sign a decent 3. I assume we'll go for the former in hopes that our young guys (Hairston, Gee, and Anderson) will be able to contribute.

From 48 Minutes of Hell:

quote:
If Splitter commands the entire MLE, the Spurs are limited to the lower level and vet minimum contracts. These, and sign and trade options.

Therefore, the Spurs would be looking at guys like Brewer, Ryan Gomes, etc.

Damn, I was hoping RJ would bust his arse and come into camp a little lighter and ready to play.

Very bad news. Even though he wasn't what anyone expected him to be, we still have dick at SF. Less than Dick, now, since Richard Jefferson is gone.

And a 15mm ending contract would have some nice value to people that want to get under the cap next year for Melo nad Yao.

The MLE will most likely go almost entirely to Splitter. Not going to have much to give a free agent. Best bet would be a S&T of RJ.

How would that work? If we sign Splitter for the full MLE, we wouldn't have squat to offer RJ. I thought the only way we could use a cap exception to re-sign (and trade in this case) a player is if that player has played multiple years with our club.

When I first saw the headline, I assumed him and the Spurs had worked out a smaller per year long term contract to keep his skills but save some luxury tax money this year. He is a fool to pass up that cash this year. Plus, next year he would have been a decent free agent compared to this year's class. His agent must have convinced him that this is the year that everyone has the cash.

Per David Lord of DallasBasketball.com, very possible that RJ resigns with SA for a long-term contract at less money.

Could be a mutual agreement between RJ & the Spurs...save the Spurs $15 mil of cap room next year & the Spurs will give RJ more years, netting RJ more money overall than if he had taken the $15 mil then went somewhere to play for the VM.

Adding Splitter and Anderson is a good step. I don't know if Jefferson does more harm than good or not.

One this is for sure, if he departs, the spurs are thin.

Only a SA native could make that joke.

If so, great move for both parties. For all the crap he received last year RJ is still the best offensive SF the Spurs have had since Sean Elliot. The Spurs front office must know what they are doing. And I really think he will be better next year now that he has had a year in the system.

Also, I don't expect Anderson to play much, if at all, next year.

Uh oh...

do we have a Blair redux thread coming?
MassAggie97

I said all along there was a strong chance Blair got the rookie treatment from Pop, and he did. If Anderson has his head on straight, he might expect about the same kind of playing time. No better than that though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since Splitter was a 1st Round pick he has to come in under a standard 1st Round deal and that deal won't affect the Spurs' MLE.

I think this is just the first move of how LeBron is coming to SA to be the new SF! CIA Pop! Ok, maybe not but it was a nice fantasy.

The Spurs hold his Bird rights. Bird rights still apply to a player who has played for 3 years under the same contract and have been traded in that time.

You could sign 3-1 year contracts with the same team and they would have your bird rights.
You could sign a 3+ year deal and get traded every year and the last team you signed with would have your bird rights.

You have to give them the rookie scale contract for a couple years, but they changed it so that if they sit out, you can pay them more. Otherwise, you would never get some of the best European talent to America, and Stern ultimately wants the best 400 players in the world in the NBA.

Report is, he is re-signing with the Spurs for more years. Apparantly he has been working out privately with Pop in order to fit in better with the Spurs system.

If he is putting in the time to be an asset to the team.
