Why the hell would anyone give Joe Johnson a max deal?

He just turned 28. He is a two guard whose scoring numbers have declined every year since 2006. And he basically quit playing as his team got eliminated from the playoffs not even two months ago.

This will be worse than the Rashard Lewis signing.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. He was terrible during the playoffs.

Over the last 3 years he averaged:

21.4 Pts
5.5 Ast
4.5 Reb
1 Stl

While shooting 44% from the field and making FT's at an 82% clip.

The answer to your question, lots of teams would offer the Max or something close to it for that type of production. He's about as good a #2 as most teams could hope for. His issue in Atlanta is that they asked him to be the #1.

SuperAg nailed it

As a #2 guy he would be spectacular. He would be the perfect compliment to a guy like Lebron. A knockdown shooter who doesn't need the ball to score in bunches.

Problem is, in Atlanta he's got to be THE GUY. And he's not capable of that. This will end up sinking that franchise over the next 2-3 years and then when they find someone to trade him to, he probably comes back and bites them in the a$$ as a great 2nd banana on a contending team.

This would be a terrible signing for them. But money talks so he's probably back to the ATL.

Atlanta is probably damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

They need JJ to be one of the top 4-5 teams in the East. Having JJ as a max player kills them from being anything other than a nice playoff team.

Yahoo.com reported that the Hawks offered a six-year, $119 million contract to Johnson in their meeting and that Johnson was prepared to accept the offer.

Atlanta....we hate winning.
