Is he going to have 6 hats in front of him from each team and put on the one of the team he chooses?

at first I really laughed at this "one hour primetime special" nonsense...but then I read this...

quote:
Those sources said that James' representatives requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the one-hour special, with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and that ESPN agreed to the proposal but had not been told what James has decided.

With that, I'm cool with it. We all knew the announcement was going to halt the sports & news world anyway, with a bunch of time after a presser to analyze nonsense with a bunch of idiots...so at least they took control of the situation and put the proceeds from ad sponsorship to a good cause.

still stupid.

so him having a ho-hum press conference, that every news outlet would pick up...and then ESPN would go on for an hour afterwards to BS about it would be just fine...but him announcing an ESPN 1 hour block with the proceeds going to charity is stupid?

As much as we'd all like to hear it "leaked" through twitter and other reports...it isn't going to happen, and never was. He was always going to announce it himself. At least this way he can do some good out of it.

The LeBron haters are showing their colors on this thread.

Seriously...take a step back from the situation and ask yourself if you ever thought the most important player in the NBA on the court and off would not have a press conference to announce his future.

THEN...think about the followup on that press conference and the coverage it would generate.

This is a very creative way to help out a good cause, instead of letting ESPN reap the rewards to the entire situation.

Oh...and I agree with this. However, if the Cavs got a sign & trade from TOR for Bosh, and were able to sign CP3 next year...it wouldn't be dumb at all. As someone who will happily admit he likes what LeBron brings to the NBA...I'd like him to go to NYK, NJN, or MIA....but I agree it's likely he'll stay.

Who cares if he's an attention hoor, especially if millions of people are going to give you all that attention. I'll probably tune in.

It's cool that he's using his attention-hoorness for a good cause.

LeBron is staying in Cleveland. These top basketball stars who want all the attention either want to be in LA or NY. Well, he can't go to LA because of Bryant and NY is a joke. Therefore, he's going to stay put. Miami does not give a **** about basketball and none of these egomanics want to follow Jordan in Chicago. After LeBron's hour long special, ESPN will then devote all their time to Brett Favre's decision. (And we already know he is coming back)

I hope he does the hat thing also, but doesn't make it past the clearinghouse and needs to go JUCO for a year or two.

Until he wins a ring, he's just another free agent.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. FWIW though, I think the press conference hype is a bit much.

Supposedly reports are saying it is between Cleveland and Miami. Lame. I hope he does not stay in Cleveland.

Why wouldn't I? Seven years, no rings. Best team record in the NBA two years in a row with nothing to show for it.

Regardless of what happens this off-season, the Lakers are probably going to end up three-peating next year. They'll still contend for a couple years after that. Then, you have an OKC team coming up.

If LeBron couldn't do it the past two years where the eventual champs were relatively weak/flawed historically speaking, I don't think he's going to do anytime soon.

Honestly, I'd rather have Kevin Durant on my team right now over LeBron. Dead serious.

If your point is that the hype is overblown, then I agree 100%. But the fact is he is the most anticipated FA in the most anticipated FA class in NBA history. Which is a far cry from being "just another free agent" whether he has a ring or not. I guess I didn't understand that comment.

Why couldn't he just give the money to the Boys and Girls Clubs? Come on....it's all about focusing attention on himself. He is hiding behind the Boys and Girls Club deal so he doesn't get roasted as bad in the press.

Also, what "rewards" do you think ESPN would reap if they covered it if it were a traditional press conference? Do you really think they would sell more ads for Sportscenter based on this (if it were done like any regular coverage)? Make no mistake, this is all about Lebron. All of you saying this is some great humanitarian gesture crack me up.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no one is saying it's a "great humanitarian gesture."

It must be easy to win arguments in your mind since you create fabrications to debate.

All I said was that it's going to be covered bigtime anyway, and this is a way to at least control the situation and do some good.

I understand why people see think think it's all ego, and I don't disagree at all it's a huge ego/brand thing. That being said, whether you like him or not, and whether he was quiet or not, the media has been gearing up for this for over a year now. No matter how quiet he would want to be, it was never going to happen. It was always going to come down to this huge presentation and media circus, whether he controlled it or not. This is high dollar entertainment, with the biggest basketball star in the league. Some people need to better understand that aspect of it.

A 25 year old who has been told he's the next Jordan his entire life (despite what hes actually accomplished on the court) has a big ego? Shocker.

Who cares. The national media is eating this **** up like crazy - might as well put your narcissism to good use and get some money out of it for the Boys & Girls Club. People have done much worse things with that kind of national attention.

Wow. You should retire to the General Board then, because you are no longer allowed to discuss basketball. My God. There isn't a GM in the league that agrees with you.

30 points, 8 rebounds a game and all he cares about is basketball. He's a great teammate and competitor (LeBron is definitely the former, but the latter has been up for debate lately).

Durant finished second in MVP voting at age 21. So would I rather have a 30 ppg scorer/rebounder with unlimited range on his jumper who has a killer instinct and no chemistry issues with FIVE MORE YEARS UNTIL HE HITS HIS PRIME over LeBron James whose come off two horrific playoff exits? Yes. Yes, I would. No question.
