He was going to get torched by the media and butthurt fans no matter what he did. If he quietly leaked the announcement to someone like Brian Windhorst they would demand that he put on a lengthy press conference to say goodbye.

No win situation for LeBron. He put himself in this position though by quitting on his team in the playoffs and not controlling his image very well in the press lately.

I think the only thing he owes them is not humiliating them with a 1 hour display of attention hoaring at a level professional sports has never seen.

going to the heat was probably his worst play with regard to his image

if he stays in cleveland, the simple people of that state rejoice and love him even more. the metropolitan markets shrug their shoulders and find something else interesting in five minutes.

if he goes to chicago, he goes into a great situation where he is the alpha dog. he'd get chopped up, but the whole i want to win now argument makes more sense in chicago where they already have a ton of pieces.

if he goes to nyc, he's the potential savior of basketball within the city. he could play up that angle with the media pretty easily.

going to miami was IMO the weakest move he could make. raising the white flag in a way.

assassinating cleveland on live TV was awesome, though.

I completely agree with Dave. Good post.

I think the miami experiment is going to blow up unless they figure out a creative way to pay for a supporting cast and keep Bosh and Wade healthy for the whole season.

Watching that team fail to win 50 games will be awesome. Just wait until D-Wade gets hurt again.

As an aside, they may set a record for most lopsided team foul differential in a season.

It is going to be those three and nobodies against the world. 48 minutes a game for 82 games + 20 - 35 playoff games. I don't see how this is going to work either.
