Who else thinks the Mavs have what it takes this year? Best defense I have ever seen them play, zone or not.

I think they are better this year, but I feel like I've seen this story before...

Honestly its nice watching them play so good, but I'm not gonna get pumped up for the regular season. We'll see how it shakes out once we get to the playoffs.

it's the mavs, there is a better chance of the clippers winning the title this year than the mavs

Best team since 2006, but the elite competition is better now. The Lakers and Celtics are better than anyone in 2006, and the Spurs and Heat may be better as well.

Only 3 times have they *actually* had the fundamental stats to to be a title contender (2011, 2006, 2007). Other years there were obvious fatal flaws backed up by the stats. That they manage to win 50+ games every year and show flashes of greatness is a testament to great player leadership and durability and stable ownership.

They are back to playing at a top 5 defensive level with a defensive minded focus that they had in 2007. But I just can't get past that it's the same 2 Man Game of Dirk/Jet pick and pop in the 4th quarter that has failed in the playoffs every year. Is this really the 7th season of this?

I think the presence of Chandler has been huge this year as well...

this Mavs team is prob as good if not better than any of their teams from the past decade. unfortunately, the lakers, celtics, and heat are also much much better

as far as title chances go, id put the mavs way behind the three aforementioned teams, and prob on the same level as the spurs

There's a better chance Yao Ming plays 70+ games in a season ever again than the Mavs winning this year.

I think the Mavs have about the same chance as the Spurs, which is to say NO chance as long as the lakers are healthy.

I'd put three teams in upper echelon. Then I'd put Mavs in second echelon with a couple more teams. All of them have a legitimate chance.

You don't have to beat Celtics, Heat, and Lakers all in one year. Mavs might have to beat two of them though.

It's pretty early. An injury to any of those big three and scenario changes drastically.

Mavs have shown willingness to make the big trade. Lakers were the favorite until they pulled off the Gasol trade. Maybe the Mavs or some other contender pull off a blockbuster trade and raise the stakes.

Why does everyone all-of-a-sudden consider the Miami Heat to be "elite" or "upper echelon"?

What have they done other than put together a nice win streak? I am not a hater by any means, but it boggles my mind that people still believe that you can just amass talent and assume that it will result in an elite team.

I'm not saying that they can't be elite. Just that as it stands, they've done nothing that proves to me that they ARE elite.

I know better than to get my hopes up, but the Mavs do have the following wins so far:

San Antonio
Boston
Miami (X2)
Orlando
Utah (X2)
OKC

They don't play LA until Jan 19, so we'll see. The next Spurs game should be fun too.

My thinking exactly, DCC. People seem to be forgetting we have beaten good teams and the Spurs SOS so far has not beeen what ours has been. Their record should not be that good. We have beaten really hot teams with long win streaks including the Spurs.

The Mavs always do well in the regular season and collapse in one way or another in the postseason. They change something up every year (this year, Chandler), but in the end it fails.

Of course I can't say with certainty it will fail this time, but I would bet on it. Even if Chandler doesn't succumb to another injury, I think when teams take it up another notch in the playoffs, the Mavs will find a way to fail like they always do.

they've got as good a shot as anyone in the league right now.

Love the Mavs but we have the same challenge as always: Lakers and Spurs. Then Boston or Miami. I rate the chances at 10%.

I think the Mavs are the third best team in the league right now behind the Spurs and Celtics. Maybe even the Heat. They'll have to remain healthy and keep up this level of play, but they DO have a legitimate shot.

IMO all the title talk this year is meaningless until the Lakers decide to flip the switch and we can get a better look at them against some of the elites.

The seem to be in a bit of a slumber right now.
