The Mavericks are aggressively trying to acquire Carmelo Anthony, according to league source.

Dallas isn't concerned about receiving any assurances from Anthony about signing a long-term deal after the season.

Mark Cuban is eager not only to add Anthony to an already dangerous roster, but also to steal him from the Nets and billionaire rival Mikhail Prokhorov.

The Mavericks are planning what one rival executive described as a "hard" push.

They have yet to make a concrete offer to the Nuggets for Anthony.

The Rockets are also believed to be a team that is interested in either landing Anthony or becoming a third-team in any team.

So Cuban is going to trade away half of his 23-5 Mavs to pick up Carmelo Anthony for half of a year?

Brilliant decision if he does it.

Any Dallas proposal would have to include the expiring contracts of Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson. More money would need to be added -- Tyson Chandler? -- or a third team would need to be recruited in order to take Harrington and/or Billups off Denver’s hands.

If they would just lose Butler and Stevenson while getting a third team involved, the Mavs would have to pull the trigger. I don't see it happening, but they would be scary good.

I think the Mavs have about the same chance as the Spurs, which is to say NO chance as long as the lakers are healthy.

So you're saying that Cuban should keep the current team together, even though they have essentially no chance at a title? Cuban would be an idiot to trade anybody from this 23-5 team that won't compete for a title, even if he's adding an elite player who might turn them into real contenders?

Make up your mind dude.

Didn't say that. But the current Mavs roster has chemistry, they've got a superstar who's playing his best ball, and they've got a good surrounding cast. To me, losing 2 or 3 surrounding cast members from a 23-5 team is not worth adding another superstar who may or may not want to even be there.

I don't believe he would, that's why I think it would be a mistake.

Cuban came out saying that there isn't any truth in the rumor.

It would be dumb to break up this team to get Melo for half a year. If Melo signed a new deal then Cubes should make that move. Dirk and Melo together would be rediculous.

If and only if. If he pull the Rent-a-Melo and it fails the Mavs can kiss any championship window goodbye. Assuming it's open right now...

If you can trade Butler and Stevenson's expirings plus Beaubois for Rent a Melo then you have to do it. That doesn't affect the championship window any worse than not doing anything and losing Butler for nothing. There is nothing that Butler does better than Anthony. It's a complete upgrade. Also factor in that Cuban will get something in a sign and trade from the Knicks
