According to ESPN, the deal would send Favors and Harris to Utah, with the Warriors as a third team in the trade.

Good for New Jersey.

Deron > Melo. Yeah, I mean it.

Harris+Favors for Deron Williams is a downright steal. Especially when you consider they were about to ship them plus picks for Melo.

WTF is Utah doing? They let Deron run off the longest tenured coaches in the NBA, then they trade his ass? WTF?

Wonder if this is the trade:

Wonder if Utah would ask to get David Lee and Kris Humphries as well so they can stock up on white guys.

Multiple sources reporting the deal is official.

Nets get Deron Williams
Jazz get Favors, Harris, and undisclosed picks

No word on other teams being involved, but now it looks like it's just a two team trade.

What I really wonder is what the Rockets could have done to get Deron Williams? Maybe Deron wasn't interested in extending to stay in Houston, but Houston has so many assets and the ability to take on salary.

Plus Chase Buddinger has to be worth at least twice to Utah as Favors, right?

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=48sblj9
That would pretty much rule for the Rockets, right?

I bet Utah would only trade him to the East. This is insane - NJ gets the better/younger player for much less than they offered for Melo?

A) Disappointed that this wasn't a drawn out 2-4 month ordeal like Carmello. I mean, who can't get enough SportsCenter updates on "No news on the Carmello front, but a trade is coming...maybe"?

B) As mentioned above, disappointed no white guys are involved.

C) Very happy to see another stud player from the West head East.

Nets get Deron Williams, Brandan Wright & Dan Gadzuric.

Warriors get Troy Murphy.

Jazz get Derrick Favors & Devin Harris plus draft picks and cash.

Deron is only 2 months younger than Melo, but yeah.

Unless NJ packaged in a couple dozen picks, this doesn't make sense. I'd much rather have a PG that plays defense, can post, can drive, can shoot and can distribute than a SF that can post up, slash, doesn't play defense and that's about it.

Just heard Utah gets two first rounders in addition to $3mm, Favors and Harris.

Still, that beats Favors, Harris, 4 picks for Melo.

that was my first thought....why didn't the rockets offer something? maybe they did and the jazz weren't interested.

i don't know that i see williams extending in jersey either though. but it's a much less risky venture than melo because you get him for 1 1/2 years instead of a few months. if he doesn't sign an extension, move him like the nuggets did with melo.

i'd really like to hear that morey was making calls to utah, otherwise i'll have lost quite a bit of confidence in him.

As a Spurs fan, I like this in large part because it presumably keeps the Mavs from getting Devin Harris back for Butler's expiring contract, which I believe had been rumored.

I am simply stunned at this trade!!! I wonder what the Mavs woulda had to give up to get DW back home in Dallas? Butler's contract, Roddy-B, 1st rounder?

Williams certainly won't play for the Jazz tonight as he is no longer on the team.

It's rare to have superstars traded within the conference. I don't think Mavs had a chance to get him. Crazy that everyone has focused on Melo and will continue to obsess over him while the Nets got the better player for less. Only argument for Melo is that he is more marketable.

Not a chance in hell. Utah got a starting PG, a teenaged rookie PF with huge athletic ability and two first rounders from a ****ty team. And you want to give them an expiring contract, a backup point guard who has played 40 minutes this year and a late 20s first round pick?

Even after Deron Williams murdered Jerry Sloan in his sleep, Deron's value is about the same as Dirks - maybe more since he is only like 26. Maybe Utah trades Deron for Dirk straight up.

As a Mavs fan, I feel the same way. Unless the PG is Deron Williams, the Mavs needs 2s and 3s. Harris does nothing for me other than add to a backlog of smaller guards (Terry, JJ, Roddy)

I would do this in a heartbeat. That said, NJ was asking for the above proposal with the exception of another injured Mav in lieu of Roddy.

Williams had made it clear that he was leaving Jazz as soon as possible. He wasn't going to sign extension. The rumor was that he would join the Knicks and Melo. But it was going to be next year. It was either trade him or lose him like Lebron James.

Actually, New Jersey wasn't even asking as much from the Mavs as another poster suggested.

Sources briefed on the teams' discussions told ESPN.com that the Nets want the expiring contract of out-for-the-season swingman Caron Butler, Mavs rookie Dominique Jones and a first-round pick.

Apparently, Deron was traded without an extension.

Brian T. Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune adds this: "Williams is not happy with trade."

Ouch. Gave up 2 firsts, Favors (basically a third first) and Harris for someone that is going to walk in a year?

Maybe I'm too high on Harris. Or maybe I need to get the images of the 2006 series out of my head and realize they are both very different teams now. It just seemed like Harris was a huge part of the matchup problems the Mavs gave the Spurs.

Absolutely. Spurs couldn't keep him out of the lane and it opened up the offense for the Mavs.

Who do we have to worry about now? No one is worried about Kidd or Terry driving the paint.

Still too early to confirm, but Roddy Beaubois should be better than 2006 Harris. Harris missed a ton of games as well in 2006 and was widely expected to be a non-factor until he was unleashed on the Spurs. Sure now I'd rather have 2011 Harris for the playoffs because of known experience, but it's not a complete dropoff to Beaubois and Barea.

ok, so turns out under league rules, williams can't sign an extension until july and by then, the current CBA will have expired. so the nets couldn't have negotiated an extension with him prior to the deadline.

but still, you'd think you might at least chat with the guy before pulling the trigger.

Once the trade is announced players can not play any game (old or new club) until all the players involved in the trade clear physicals (if the team request one).

At least that is what I heard.

A theory on the radio is the Mavs were tying to get Harris so they could flip him to the Jazz for D. Williams. Obviously there would have been other pieces involved, that makes more sense to me than trying to add Harris fr the stretch run.

jackie...how does that make any sense?

wouldn't it be a S&T like the Nets were talking about Denver do with Melo? And Melo didn't have to wait until July.

am i missing something

Does it hae anything to do with Melo being in the last year of his deal while Williams still has another year on his? I'm just taking a guess if here if what Jackie said is right.

The Nets couldn't have signed an extension with Deron Williams. But the Jazz could have. But he had burned all his bridges there.

As an outsider who doesn't really care about Williams, Knicks, or Nets - this should be to watch from the sidelines. Deron hated Utah, but he's really gonna hate New Jersey. No way is the Russian going to get outbid. And no way do they trade him across the river. And throw in the collective bargaining agreement mess. It should be a great sideshow.
