5 years is usually a good sample size for examining a draft. The 06 draft was the first "modern" draft in that this was the first draft affected by the 19 year old age limit.

Lets redraft this lottery.
Just draft the best available player.

To see who got picked:
http://www.nbadraft.net/nba_draft_history/2006.html

A 1st pick will get 14 points
A 2nd will get 13
and so on until the 14th pick gets one point.

After a few days I guess we can average out the scores and see what we all think.

Here's mine

1. LeMarcus Alridge
2. Rudy Gay
3. Rajon Rondo
4. Brandon Roy
5. Paul Millsap
6. Andrea Bargnani
7. Kyle Lowry
8. Shannon Brown
9. Ronnie Brewer
10. Leon Powe
11. Thabo Sefolosha
12. Randy Roye
13. Tyrus Thomas
14. JJ Reddick

I vividly remember when the Knicks took Balkman, everyone was beyond shocked. They had covered Isiah's crappy drafts all day assuming he wouldn't do another, and he outdid himself.

Rondo's baller, but have to wait and see how he plays when he doesn't have 3 Hall-of-Famers on the floor with him.

Generally, Isiah Thomas was a pretty good drafting G.M.

Teams have certainly done worse than Balkman at the 20th pick.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Shawne Williams life. Seems like he's turned it around and is playing better. He's been a loser quite a few times, however.

He was there for the draft from 2004-2007, I believe.

year - round/pick - player
2004 - 2/14 - Trevor Ariza
2005 - 2/24 - Dijon Thompson
2005 - 1/30 - David Lee
2005 - 1/8 - Channing Frye
2006 - 1/29 - Mardy Collins
2006 - 1/20 - Renaldo Balkman
2007 - 1/23 - Wilson Chandler

Ariza, Lee, and Chandler were good picks.

Balkman has averaged 4.1 ppg and played in an average of 41 games per season, but he is still in the league.

Mardy Collins averaged 3.9 ppg and played in an average of 47 games per season. No longer in the league.

Dijon Thompson played in 16 total games over two seasons. No longer in the league.

Frye is a solid NBA player, but 12.5 and 6 on and off the bench with no defense is not worthy of the 8th overall pick.

He was 3/5 on his first round picks and 1/2 on his second round picks.

Overall, I have a hard time saying whether that is good or bad... I don't know the hit rate.

The average NBA career is a little under 5 years. Those picks currently average 4.2 years in the league, but that will obviously change as 4 of them are still going strong. That 5 year career includes free agents who play less than a full season, so it's hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison. I found a thesis about this topic, and their data showed an average career length of 4.8 years but a standard deviation of 3.6 years, which shows that many very short and very long contracts make comparisons difficult.

The Morrison pick and the Tyrus Thomas trade both sucked balls.

Not a proud day for MJ or the Bulls.s
