Dirk seriously gets the shaft on nearly every Texags.com thread I ever open.

it's because there is almost always a better option. you don't hear me complaining that there are no spurs here. i think you're the biased one.

would you put lebron in that starting five or do you think he would hog the ball too much and not play "team" ball

Except for the fact that everyone here (apparently except for you) knows I am a Spurs fan.

Dirk can arguably be considered the best offensive PF in the game, and one of the best all-time. Timmy's career was better, but lets not pretend his skills haven't fallen off the last couple years.

There was no mention of American only in this thread... Pau has to be your PF, right?
Obi Wan Ginobili
How long do you want to ignore this user?
ok, you're not biased. dirka is still a major defensive liability, too big of one to be put on a list called "ultimate starting five".

his offensive skills are unparalleled for someone his size. no one questions this. but that's all he's got. a decent big man can eat his lunch and **** his tuna girlfriend down low.

Alright, if not dirk then Pau.

I'm just saying there are several options which I think would be better than Griffin.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
PG: Paul
SG: Wade can play 2 with paul @ the 1
SF: Lebron
PF: Pau or Amare
C: (No one here is better than Dwight....) Put Timmy in?

Too many options in the NBA to have a perfect team....
I'd say yours and mine would split :p

I guess I don't understand the Pau love. I would put quite a few PF's above him. For my money, give me Aldridge.

3. LeBron James

CP3
Wade
Lebron
Aldridge/Dirk
Howard

If I was trying to compile 5 guys who I thought would play good together on the floor. Aldridge can hit the 15 footer but Dirk does his damage almost exclusively from that distance, having him stretch the floor would allow Howard to do work inside without having two players occupy similar space. But Aldridge is 10x better defensively so it's a tossup for me.

Also I think CP3 is a little twerp but I'd want mainly a facilitator running the point who you also have to respect as a scorer.

I would put Mike Conley in there then, he is sure to have some triple jump skills, and it is hard to find a good triple jumper.

when you say ultimate starting five you didnt specify it had to be current players...

Derek Rose - PG
Michael Jordan - SG
Hakeem Olajuwaon - Center
Lebron James - SF
Tim Duncan - PF

I wouldn't put Derrick Rose and Lebron on the ALL TIME NBA team just yet.
Enviroag02

My lineup didnt really mean ALL TIME NBA either. With today's game being very much more athletic than it was in the past and it being more physical with more above the rim play...if I had to pick players from any era to play in today's game...that would be my lineup.

Any list that doesn't include Lebron is incredibly stupid. Dude leads the league in efficiency ratings every single year for a reason.

This really is stupid to exclude dirk. One of the top three closers in the league.

How is excluding Dirk stupid?

If I'm building a team of the 5 best players, I'm not going to take an unathletic, finesse PF who doesn't play defense. Sorry.

The only argument that could possibly be made for including Dirk is that he'll spread the floor for Dwight and the other player's defense can cover up for him.

I love Dirk, I think he's a great player, but he's definitely not the PF I'd pick for my team.

Olajuwaon and Duncan are going to run the paint and the 10 footers. Jordan will handle the dribble drive and the step back jumpers. You need someone to get the ball in to the post with a pass-first mentality, so give me Stockton or a 25-year-old Jason Kidd running the point. As for SF, I want Larry Bird. Tough SOB who plays defense and can knock down any shot from the post to the 3 point line.

There is no way an "ultimate starting 5" should include a PF who doesn't rebound or defend... or win in the playoffs.
keithd03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes because all the other PF's in this thread have "Won" in the playoffs. Griffin? Aldridge? Amare?

If you want to exclude Dirk, that is fine. I probably wouldn't put him on an ultimate starting 5. But to say his playoff performance is a reason not to sounds pretty dumb to me.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My choice is Gasol.

Griffin isn't there yet, Stoudemire doesn't play good defense, and Aldridge I haven't seen enough of.
MW03
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Tired shtick, brother. I'll give you the defense argument because there are a number of better defensive PFs in the league, even though I'm certain the dogging on "Irk" is all repeating what someone once said and calling it gospel.

But rebounding? Do you recognize that in 11 seasons totaling more than 100 games of NBA playoffs, Nowitzki has averaged 25 and 10? Can you name me 4 other players that have done that?

No, you can't. Because only 3 other players in NBA history have: Hakeem Olajuwon, Bob Pettit, and Elgin Baylor. Dirk Nowitzki is the fourth.

So if you want to dog his defense, I guess you can when you compare him to other PFs like Duncan, who is clearly an elite defender. And if you want to say that Duncan et al are better players because they have a better all around game --even though Dirk is a better offensive player than them-- then so be it.

But let's not be intellectually dishonest and act like he's overrated.

You couldn't find a GM in the league who would take Gasol over Dirk.

The Lakers would trade Gasol for Dirk in a heartbeat and would have to throw another player at the Mavs to even up the trade.

I think there are plenty of GMs who would take Gasol over Dirk. They are such different players that it depends on the system.

Griffin is still a defensive liability and still makes too many bad decisions. The Clippers would have been better if he was truly the best power forward in the game (over Gasol, Garnett, etc.)
