Many would stll say Kobe, but I am not so sure. It is certainly close.

Still Kobe. Barely.

Nowitzki and Chris Paul are tied for a close second.

Durant a veeeeeeery close third.

I was just thinking it feels like the 2006 WCF:

When Dirk scored 50 vs PHX in '06, he was 14-26 FG and 17-18 FT. Tonight (thru 3) he's 10-12 FG, 18-18 FT, 38pts #betternow

On the offensive end, I'd easily take Dirk over Kobe. The question is how much a step on defense has Kobe lost?

Durante and Dirk are both better than Kobe now.

Hard to argue Kobe over Dirk after last series. Dirk was clearly the best player in the series

I would take Durant.

Wouldn't take Durant over Dirk on the offensive end either, atleast not right now. He's closer than Kobe, though, imo. Durant maybe? does more for you on defense, but he's not that good (yet).

Durant has been the league's leading scorer for two years in a row. He's only 22. I'm going to go ahead and take Durant on offense.

What does age have to do with who is better right now?

They obviously score differently, but in the end, the only thing Durant does better than Dirk on offense is making sure he takes more shots than the rest of the guys on the floor. Would you take Monta Ellis over Dirk on the offensive end? I think he's scored more ppg than Dirk the past two seasons.

Exactly, the question wasn't "if you are rebuilding a franchise who would you want"

He's playing the best ball out of anyone in the west in the post season, that's for sure.

48 pts on 15 shots. Un-freaking-real

Dirk is that dude, not gonna lie. I figure Durant's athletic advantage would make him more versatile against other defenses.

Again, 48 on 15 shots is pretty damn ridiculous. I'd pick Durant, but I wouldn't hate on someone else picking Nowitzki.

Fair enough, Ninja. They're both top 3 players in this conference. If I were building a team, I'd definately choose Durant.

Durant has more versatility (not that Dirk is a slouch) but is there a team out there in the West (or East) that can defend Dirk? IMO, it makes the "versatility" point a little moot.

Define "now" and you have your answer. And I don't mean "still playing this season." I just mean that it depends how far into the past one looks. Dirk is unquestionably the best player in the Western Conference in these playoffs. Kobe may be a bit hobbled by injury, but that would still be one of those "too bad so sad" deals. Dirk is playing better than him. Or anybody else in the West.

If I were building a team for the long haul, I'd take Durant. If I were building a team to play right now, I'd take Dirk.

I'm assuming we're not talking about left in the playoffs, because if so it wouldn't even be an argument at this point.

I'm not sure you can call him the best in the West just yet, but he's sure making his case as we speak. I still think he and Durant are very similar players and Durant lead the league in scoring and both Durant and Kobe got more MVP votes than Dirk did this year. I think Chris Paul should be in the discussion as well.

If I had any player in the WC for one season, I'd want Dirk. He's playing out of his mind right now. Probably one of the top-10 purely offensive players I have ever watched play.

Dirk is not a great defender but he defends much better than Durant does at this early stage of his career. I think Durant will get there and then some, though. He's truly phenomenal. But right now, Dirk's overall game is better IMO, and his team is on a seven-game playoff winning streak. You don't see that all that often.

Dirk is as good of an offensive threat as Larry Legend was, though he is not as good of an all-around player. Larry averaged 10 boards and 6 assists per game over his career, while Dirk has averaged 8.4 and 3.

He's just not quite as thick and strong as Larry was.

You must not have watched the two transition defensive clinics Dirk put on which saw him moonwalk into the cheap seats while Durant went coast-to-coast for lay-ups.

Not to mention the should've been flagrant towards the end of the game as well. Even Van Gundy, who was loving him some Dirk mentioned it could've been called a flag 1.

Nope, we're just remembering the .6 bpg he averages for his career and the .8 bpg he's averaging thus far in the playoffs...epic fail on your part

playing good defense is more than just spg and bpg.

Durant is more versatile, but Dirk is probably better all around. You won't see Dirk fly up the court like Durant did a few times last night with the ball, but Durant needs more than the 1" Dirk needs to get shots off.

And being a better all-around players is more than just shooting w/ only a 1" vertical.

i didnt mean vertical, i meant 1" of space. you crowd durant he struggles getting shots off. with dirk it doesn't matter

Oh I see...in that case I'd say that Dirk the far superior shooter and Durant's the better scorer

It's been very clear in the playoffs who the best player in the WC is, so right now, give me Dirk. I also didn't mind seeing him put Durant into the first row. If you ask Matt Barnes, the formula for beating the Mavs was to punk'em. I'm actually glad to see them doing some punking of their own.

Dirk doesn't have the stones to do that, had his chance last night to foul him hard and he half assed it
