Why is Dirk always only compared to Bird? Because of the color of their skin?

If a stud black hockey player came along, would anyone think it's racist to only compare him to Mike Grier or Jarome Iginla and think it's blasphemy to compare him to Gretzky, Orr or Richard?

Why do blacks evoke Bird every time a white player comes along to have a comparison?

Who the hell else would he be compared to? How many 7 foot unorthodox big men w/ a sweet jumpshot have there been that have achieved what those two have? You're an idiot.

I agree with the OP. I think its kinda of racist. Bird was a small forward anyways.

The guy sitting in for Dan Patrick sort of touched on a similar topic this morning. He was talking to JJ Reddick, who said he'd want to be a rapper like Wiz Khalifa. The host remarked that it was interesting that he picked a black rapper rather than a white rapper and that you don't ever see that in sports.

Jimmer Fredette is the next JJ Reddick, compare Dirk and Bird, black QBs are always compared to other black QBs etc.

Its a shame, but everyone does it without thinking.

The most common comparison I see when I read articles for Jimmer is Ben Gordon, a microwave off the bench...

And I apologize for the 7 foot comment, I was trying to say that they were tall, multi-dimensional forwards.

Dirk gets compared to Bird b/c they had similar games, as is evidenced by the thread arguing about the two and people having arguments for both sides. Dirk will be compared to the other all time greats when trying to decide whether he is a top 30, 20, 10, etc. player.

I don't think Nate Robinson was getting butthurt when people were comparing him to Spud Wedd in dunk contests b/c they're both short.

This is a classic example of people trying to make an issue out of a non issue.

I agree with most of that noobbird, however this kind of things seems to often enough that I do believe some of it has to do with the color of their skin.

Durant is the player closest to Dirk in style.

Eh, I don't think Durant is similar to Dirk at all...Dirk lives off of pick and rolls and posting up at the elbow, I think Durant gets the ball off of screens to open him up, more of a Ray Allen/Rip Hamilton style of play.

Dirk has more strength than Durant so he can seal his man off and get an entry pass whereas w/ Durant, the majority of the time he seems to catch the ball on the move b/c he isn't strong enough to get position for an entry pass.

2011, I agree that skin color does play a large part of it...but, to be fair, look at the all-time greats when it comes to NBA players; the majority are African American.

To me, this is a huge problem with the game of basketball today; the majority of black athletes, whether it be due to poor coaching, skipping college, etc. are lacking in fundamentals, b/c they are more athletic and they and their coaches growing up rely upon that athleticism as opposed to developing the player.

By no means am I calling Dirk or Bird unathletic, but I think we can all agree that wasn't the forte of their game. I think that white players generally get compared to white players, and black to black, due to the fact that their playing styles are inherently different; it has nothing to do w/ skin color, it has to do w/ the fact that they play the game in certain ways.

Dirk is compared to Bird because they are both highly skilled, prolific scorers that didn't neccessarily have the elite athleticism of their peers, but made up for it with their craft and hard work. I think the comparison is not too outrageous. I also think the fact that Bird was a SF and Dirk is a PF is not that big of a deal. Dirk plays like a SF most of the time anyways.

Dirk in my opinon is a small forward. Maybe the call him a power forward, but when I think power forward I think Karl Malone, Kevin McHale, Jame Worthy, Charles Barkley and their style of play.
