UPDATE No. 4: The Rockets have now completed their interviews with Kevin McHale and assistant coaches Lawrence Frank (Boston) and Dwane Casey (Dallas).

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets have told the trio that they are each on level ground and that a decision should be made within a few days.

I think Kevin McHale would probably cause a lot of fans to have some angst. I've heard that he actually was respected as a head coach during his time with the Timberwolves, but there were questions about his ability to put together a staff and work with them cohesively, etc. I dunno. To be fair, it's the freaking Timberwolves. It's like the Charlotte Bobcats -- Larry Brown getting them to .500 was a pretty awesome feat.

Mchale seems like he'd be really arrogant and different to work with

So we went from Rick Adelman, who is arguably one of the top 10 or 15 coaches of all-time... to a guy with no fire and a 38-105 coaching record.

You know why react. Classic fan take.

Aldelman was not the right guy for this team. Sorry he was not. Now is McHale the right guy, I DON'T KNOW. But to pull out win and loss stats and throw them out there without looking into the fundamentals of the situation shows a lack of basketball knowledge.

Now if you say that McHale was terrible as a personnel evaluator you would get no argument from me. He will not be doing that here. In fact that was one of the sticking issues with RA, he wanted to have more say in that realm.

McHale is going to coach and as a coach, despite the record, he has shown a lot of good things. He knows how to work with developing talent, vets respect him and he will not be fighting the Rocket front office over the personnel decisions they make.

I am at least, like I do every hire, willing to give it a chance. It's stupid to react and trash something before the ball is even rolled out on the floor!

McHale could probably play center for the Rockets, too.

OPAG, I have no idea how you could say Adelman was a bad fit. I personally know a few players (Battier, Budinger, Scola) and they all enjoyed playing for him. They admitted that he got the most out of each player. Not to say there were bumps in the road (Brooks and the tension between Morey and Adelman), but he was a solid fit. This team for the most part will not be anywhere near the playoff picture for a good while if McHale stays put in Houston. McHale had a lot of issues in Minnesota, and who's to say it will be any better here. He belongs in a front office, his days on the court are over (coaching and playing). Personally, if the Rockets truly want to get better they need to seriously take a good look at Daryl Morey and see where he is taking this franchise. The firing of Adelman may be the straw that broke the camel's back. Morey's "assets" have turned into mid-level role players that are overpaid, and the draft picks are not near what anyone expected.

All the players you mentioned are vets and they are starters. He is an outstanding coach for vet team. He is not one to develop youngsters. He does not have the patience.

He fought Morey on some of the trades he made. Yet, because those trades were made the Rockets got better. RA gets stubborn at times. It's not a a good idea to say "I have no clue what to do with him" about a young player the front office traded for.

He was fickle there were time Jordan Hill played well, times he didn't but RA was anything but consistent with him. There were times he was playing really well, got subbed out and never came back in.

Aldelman lost about 5 games this year because he wore certain guys out and when the 4th Q came they were out of gas. He has his guy and can get set in his ways.

HE IS JUST NOT THE RIGHT MIX FOR THIS ROCKET TEAM. HE WILL JUST KEEP US IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK>

Another point about the players you mentioned there, they are all on the upper side of intelligence. I can assure you that Terence Williams, Thabeet and possibly Hill are not going to be great fans of RA regardless of what they say publicly.

The Rockets will stay middle of the pack as long as they don't have a true number 1 player on the team. Having a great coach isn't going to turn guys like Lowery, Battier, Scola, Martin, Brooks, Hill, Hayes, etc into legit #1 options.

If you don't have a legit #1 player, it doesn't matter how great your role players are or how great your coach is, you aren't going to be a contender.

As a Rockets fan I would say that the Rockets right now are what the Mavs would be if you added Caron Butler and subtracted Dirk. Meaning they have a lot of good players, but not that great player.

That may be true but one way or the other the Rockets need to re tool. They either need to tank a bit, go young and try to draft a top quality player or some how trade for one. Either way Aldelman is not the guy for that. He keeps them middle of the back at best.

I don't the Rockets are a championship contender as is. They sure can be a playoff caliber team if the can find a some interior defense.

Then again Miami has probably bought the crown for next few years. It is the worst possible scenario for the NBA IMHO. There is going to be an extended lock out there and maybe a crushing one. Unlike the NFL there are teams that are really losing money and a the 'superstars' really own the league.

Add to the fact that the top 'superstars' can just pack up in one of the glamor cities and I think the NBA is royally screwed.

The reason you cannot win with out one is that whether the league admits it or not there are two types of officiating.

Regular and superstar. The superstars are good enough without getting a little extra edge. They never get called for stuff that other do consistently.
