The won this championship without Butler, Beaubois, and Haywood. Assuming they resign key players like Barea, Chandler and Butler I think they have a fantastic shot at winning another title. The Mavs would have sweeped the Heat if Butler and Haywood would have been healthy.

What are the chances of Caron Butler re-signing?

I think the chances he resigns are pretty good. Wouldn't you want to resign with a team that just won an NBA title?

I honestly don't think the odds are very good. Granted, I wouldn't have ever imagined a grandpa at PG would've been good enough, but you can't overlook the growth process of some of the younger teams in these playoffs.

If Westbrook figures out how to not be a bonehead, the Thunder are scary. The Grizzlies are young and scary. And if LeBron is half the player his potential can live up to, he might just finally get a clue after all the scrutiny he was under this season and the embarrassment of losing this Finals, he may finally flip the switch and have the edge that has propelled players like Jordan and Kobe to greatness.

It will be interesting and fun to watch, but I really think this Mavs team winning is the last team of the "old guard" that we see win a championship. The landscape is changing, there is a new generation of superstars and great teams that are ready to take over and start winning championships.

As a huge mavs fan I think it's not impossible but it will be tough.

The reason being is that you could just see it this whole playoffs that the Mavs wanted this championship more than anyone they played. They were so driven and determined to win this and they put everything they had into it.

I just wonder what their motivation will be like next year. How much of that drive to win multiple championships will there be. If they can maintain that killer instinct to win and that determination I don't see why they couldn't make a deep run and possibly make it to the finals.

For now I'm going to stay on cloud nine and enjoy the ride. Next year will be next year.

Other teams will get better due to young players improving, signing new players, etc.

Dallas is already maxed out on salary and has to resign Chandler and Barea (they may not be able to do both either; I don't think they have Bird rights on Chandler, and they may not be able to afford him).

I don't think they have a shot next year all things considered, but then I didn't think they'd ever win a championship this year either.

Bad injury. Depends on the contract he demands.

I don't think these old guys can make another run like that. Thankfully the Spurs were taken out via a mismatch in the first round ala the Mavs in 2007. The Lakers were having difficulties at the time... I don't think the Mavs can repeat, but at this point I don't care.

I got the sense watching this that I was watching something special. Something that wasn't going to happen again.

Still feel that way.

But I can't get past that they beat these guys 4-2.

Not impossible, but it'll be tough.

LA has a new coach, but they might get their act together. Spurs will always be tough as long as Pop is there. OKC is only going to get better.

With a player like dirk and an owner that is not afraid to make moves and write checks.... Absolutely they could repeat.

It will be tough to repeat a run like that. Mavs shot nearly 40% from 3 for the playoffs and in the last 2 games to close out, they were 67.5% from 3, making 25 of them.

If they do, I think it will be with a pretty different look to them. I think they'll lose 2/3 out of Barea, Chandler and Butler, but I definitely think Cuban will go out and get somebody. I have no idea who that might be or who might be available that kind of fits.

This was a completely unexpected run, and wonderful in every possible way:

1) Began season hopeful, but lost Butler, and overcame it.

2) Swept the defending champs.

3) Overcame the meltdown in Portland.

4) The huge comebacks against OKC and Miami.

5) Dirk, Kidd, Marion, Terry, Chandler.

6) Beating a young and extremely talented OKC team that hasn't quite figured out how to win yet.

7) Showing LeBron that winning a title takes more than talent, determination, money, and press conferences. It requires making plays when everyone is watching, and overcoming yourself.

No, I don't think they will repeat. However, I could see a situation like the '95 Rockets, where the regular season won't matter. This is not a team anybody would want to meet in the play-offs.

If the Mavs can't do it again, I would love to see a Finals between OKC and Miami. Harden, Westbrook, and Durant against the Big 3.

One other point - Mario Chalmers is a top quartile point guard, imo. Miami really needs to let him run that offense more.

Dallas will be one of the hardest hit teams if the NBA goes to a hard cap.

The CBA will ravage this team. Next shot for Mavs may be a decade off with a crew that is in high school now.

i think every Mavs fans understands that, which is why this year was pretty much their last shot before dropping off significantly and having to rebuild. which made this title that much better.

Dirk and the Mavs have given their fans an incredible run over the past 11-12 years to reach the summit. Lots of heartaches but never losing focus and still having amazing season after season, being the #2 team in the NBA (Spurs being #1 I believe) for the longest consecutive 50+ win regular seasons.

at this point, i think every Mavs fan is okay with whatever happens next, this isn't a young team where we expect to make back to back runs.

I don't see them repeating because I think the intangible they captured this year that was a huge part of winning will be difficult to recreate, but that said, I think a work stoppage that ends similar to the last stoppage (a significantly shortened season) would actually improve their odds of repeating. Would keep the old legs fresh for the playoffs, and whatever is agreed upon CBA-wise, I don't see them gutting teams with a hard cap immediately in 2011-12. I'd anticipate some sort of phase-in period.

To answer the first question, you need to answer this question:

How much of their success was due to their will to win vs how much was due to finally figuring out how to close?

During the playoffs, there was not a close second best team. The best series was against the Heat, but the gap between the teams grew huge as Dallas made key adjustments that the Heat were unable or unwilling to make.

If the answer to my question is more the latter, it will be more difficult as everyone will be older, but doable. If it is more the former, then they will have a VERY tough time in the WC playoffs against some teams that will have gotten much better.

depends on what happens to chandler and barrea. roddy b could potentially replace barrea, but chandler is the key.

this was a magical run. will never be duplicated.

15 point comebacks TWICE in 2 weeks with less than 7 to go? not going to happen again.

soup hit it. this team had the WILL to win. while dirk might have it every year, not sure the others will.
