Only 250,000 fans for Mavs parade?

Why did so few fans show up for the Championship Parade? I thought Dallas was starved for an NBA title? I'm pretty sure the Spurs drew that many to each of their 4 parades and the Rockets had over 700,000.

Were theirs held on weekdays? It was held on thursday to actually keep crowds down.

The parade route was only 1.25 mile long I believe, not sure the length of the other cities, but I think that might have kept the #'s low. Seemed like a lot of measures were taken to keep the #'s manageable (bc apparently the 90's Cowboys' parades were a bit rowdy). They had it on a workday, a quite route, and then the main ceremony inside the stadium.

Dallas was starved for a title. They weren't starved for a parade.

Sunday night in 2007 for the spurs

They were turning people away getting off the DART at Victory Station and at the AAC. The entire route was packed on both sides.

Part of the "low" turnout probably has to do with it being on a weekday, at 10am. I was told people camped out the night before, and if you didn't arrive before 8am you were stuck with a terrible spot.

If this is just one of those SA/Houston/Dallas pissing contests, well I guess we lose then, and I'm super upset about it.

2005 was on a Sat. night and only had around 300,000. All of the Spurs parade's were held in the evening as well. I think the 2003 one was on a Wednesday.

As a friend put it after attending the Mavs parade:

"That place just wreaked of poverty"

So, not a huge shocker the San Antonio and Houston parades had a bigger turnout.

Shouldn't surprise anyone that the Spurs have bigger turnouts. And the Rockets 1994 title was the biggest moment in Houston sports history. Decades and decades of losing finally redeemed in the most dramatic fashion. Only 700,000?

I was laughing all week as it seemed the local media was trying to discourage attendance. It's too hot! No water fountains! No parking! Not enough trains! Limited access to view the players! Don't forget 1993 when gangs of thugs were randomly attacking people and looting! But we promise it's different now!

I was at the parade, and I'd guess that number is low. The fire marshal restricted Victory Plaza to 10,000. We showed up at 8am (for an 11:30 ceremony) and were turned away because it was already at capacity.

Long story short, the city was packed and it was good to see. And best of all, no violence or knuckleheadedness. It was pretty great.

I would have made the trip if it was at night or on a weekend. I'm not wasting one of my precious vacation days for a parade.

Houston's first parade was on a weekday. Can't remember if the second one was though.

I thought 250,000 was too much. I heard there were spots where the people were 40-50 feet deep. Combined with triple digit temperatures that is not worth the trouble. I doubt Houston's was no where near 700,000. That's laughable.

I thought that number seemed really low. Detroit draws over a million when the red wings win the stanley cup...in 92 degree heat....on weekdays...

Enduring temperatures reaching as high as 92 degrees, an unforgiving sun and sweltering humidity, 1.4 million people stayed put for the 2 1/2-hour-long procession and 45-minute rally in a jam-packed Hart Plaza.

Dallas is just not a very communal city.

Here's a story that details large crowd events in Texas dating back to 1997. This makes it look like 250,000 is damn good for Dallas, it beats the Cowboys anyhow.

http://www.texnews.com/texas97/mass062397.html

60,000 - 1994 Cowboys Parade
150,000 - 1996 Cowboys Parade
200,000 - 1993 Cowboys Parade
250,000 - 2011 Mavs Parade
300,000 - 1983 Pope John Paul - San Antonio
400,000 - 1997 Rockfest - Texas Motor Speedway
700,000 - 1995 Rockets Parade

+1

Attendance smack is for losers.

It really is.

Teams and fanbases that try to pump themselves up with attendance smack are typically fans of teams that rarely win championships.

Parade smack is the dumbest thing ive ever heard of.

Wow, that list left out the biggest crowd in Texas history, the 1.3 million people who watched Jean Michael Jarre's concert in downtown Houston during Houston's Sesquicentennial in 1986,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendez-vous_Houston

I guess they didn't want to publicize a concert by a guy from France.
